Mangaluru: Protests held for banning hijab, sporting beard in college

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Aug 28: Students, parents and activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) protested in front of the Srinivas College of Pharmacy, Valachil campus near here on Saturday, August 28 against the college administration for prohibiting Muslim girl students to wear hijab (headscarf) and boy students from sporting beards.

Protesters said that the first-year Muslim girl students were not allowed to wear hijab in the college, boys were stopped from sporting long beards and Muslims students were not allowed to offer Friday prayers. They alleged that such rules are an attempt by college authorities to curb religious rights.

PFI activists alleged that college principal Shabaraya and lecturer Subrahmanyam insisted that students did not wear hijab. They also said that management levied heavy fines on students.

A first-year BPharma student said while seniors were allowed to wear the hijab, her classmates were barred from wearing it. The administration said that in declaration signed by students during first-year admission agreed to the dress code on campus. The code restricts head scarves, jeans and T-shirts in classrooms, examination halls, office and library.

A Srinivas Rao, vice-president, A Shama Rao Foundation and Srinivas Group of Colleges, said the rule banning headscarf among Muslim women students was implemented as the Foundation believed in a 'uniform dress code'. The administration asked students to offer prayers during lunch time or free time.

The PFI leaders later held discussions with the principal, management and parents. The management said that the issues will be resolved within 15 days after hey hold discussion with concerned.

The college should allow muslim women to wear hijab and muslim men to grow beard. The college is allowing Sikh men to wear the turban, why don't they force sikh men to cut hair and not wear turban. This is religious discrimination against Muslims. There is a rise in elements in Mangalore that want to discriminate against other religions, Muslims should take this matter to higher courts to resolve this.

Parents should ensure that schools and colleges are used only to educate children. Education and sports are the main pillars for a young children. Please do not get into unnecessary controversies. If a college is insisting that students should wear uniform or certain prescribed dress please adhere to that. When I was schooling I was wearing a torn shirt (uniform) as most of us had no means to go for these fancy dresses. Muslims never used to wear either hijab nor boys used to sport beard. Christians muslims hindus were all studying together in a normal way. Now muslims are asking the college authorities to allow time for Friday prayers.Hindus have 101 religious celebrations. Every one will ask time for different prayers. Please therefore concentrate on studies only. For heaven's sake.

@Rahul Kumar, Mangalore: Dress code is different than UNIFORM mate. Let me explain dress code for you. if you're playing cricket or any game officially JEANS is not allowed. If you're entering a place of worship, chappals not allowed inside and in some cases men have to remove shirt, When you attend for an interviews, you don't go with a beach wear. Dress code is not Uniform. What the college is telling is to wear the dress which does not reflect your religion. Though you're right BUT Sikhs can't cut their hair just because they have to go to school or they can't leave their very long hair open. This is different when you can shave and female Sikh students do not cover their head in schools, if there is a dress code.

I know what a dress code and your explanation is wrong. I will explain it to you. Dress means Dress, Code means Rule. The military dress code is uniform, which means there is uniformity in dress code. If Sikhs can get exceptions because of religious reasons, every religion should get it. Why not make Sikhs cut hair then. Why force Muslims shave beard. Please don't nonsensical arguments here please.

Lydia Bai, I never miss to read your comments. They are very sensible and right to the point. However, on Hijab comment I am not convinced. Ban Burka fine in view of security reason. However, wearing Hijab (head scarf) is very decent. In Hinduism also, in northern states, women hide their face with goongat. It is respectable. During olden days, I remember Christians too were wearing head scarf, specially while going to church. Our nuns also cover their head. Instead of discouraging and banning head scarf, we should encourage it. It is my opinion only. God bless all.

    Peter,

My point was not on Hijab but on Mohammed, who said its a girl's birth right. Whereas we see women covered from head to toe, with just two peep-holes to allow for their eyes. I know it is imposed on them, not that they liberally embraced. He talks as if those who do not wear a Hijab don't belong to Islam hence I questioned citing these public figures.

Hijab is a welcome attire - leading politician women (Behazir Bhutto, Khalida/Hasina of Bangladesh) looked graceful in them. My disgust is at women who succumb to this diktat and don't muster enough nerve to convince a dictator that they are aware of how much covering is asked for !

Nobody should get religion inside the School and college campus, This is what happens when religion is brought inside school and college campus. Schools and colleges are for studies. Let us learn that first. Uniform dress code is a must for schools and colleges. I have studied in few reputed institutions. We never had this problem, Cause everybody was wearing what our school and college had implemented. I wish people respect what management implements. let us not forget that It is an institution that has people from different race, religious background, if everybody starts following their religion, there will be a chaos in the campus to prove whose religion is great.

These right wing groups of every religion will be waiting to pounce on these small issues. for every issue, there are protests nowadays. If the student does some mistake and he gets suspended, he will approach the right wings and will arrange a protest. No school or college suspends students without reason. When they realize that the particular student cannot be controlled with petty punishments then only they suspend the student.

These right wing groups of every religion create so much tension to the college management. They have become a headache. These groups poison the minds of the present youth and also make them violent and also teach the students to be disobedient and rowdies.

I wish the present youth use their commonsense instead of listening to useless right wing groups who influence the behavior of Students for their political motives.

With no disrespect to any community, I strongly feel that we should start to show our unity somewhere. Why not we start that from educational institutions? Educational institutions, like sports, should not be a place to show your religion. Everyone should obey the dress code. Dress code is not a uniform but how the students should be dressed. I understand that if the educational institutions are run by religious people, then those people are allowed to wear their religious dress code but not students or any other teaching staff who are not religious. For example, swamis, sadhvis, nuns, priests, mullas. Cant we study keeping religion away from us at least?? I think this is the need of hour for India. Students should be stopped from showing their religion in anyway possible, whether it is in the form of cross and other religious signs (unless it is hidden well inside the cloth) Head scarf, beard, skull cap, nama, maale. No one allowed to use school campuses to wear sabarimale attire either. sorry, there cant be a time for prayer either. Pray in your heart during school days please.

Educational Institutions where we learn discipline and impart knowledge and achieve higher degree of wisdom through our educational studies. Better to follow the guidelines laid down by the Authorities.
I doubt any Sikh student will abide by such ‘Student disciplinary code and Procedures.
If dress code is not applicable there could be many ways of dressing up as per one religion.

I remember during my college days in Government (late Sixties) college some students used come in Dothies. Better in a rainy season, just fold and tie the knot.

Institutions are within their peri- meter to impose rules. Either study or get out from these institutions. When I did my schooling in a convent with kids from all religion we or our parents dint have any problem in going to picnic together, visiting temple, church and Mosques (or dargas(ullal) am not sure). We were only bothered about the promised Shetty Icecream, Lunch in some hotel in Mangalore, evening masala dosa in some hotel for tea. These were our only concerns as the kids compared to today when some vested interest object of taking school children to a place of worship other than their faith during picnics.

I finished my college 20 years back, studied among students from all community. It was a uniform dress code then. Not sure of beard (as I don't remember seeing any of my Muslim friends or batchmates spotting a beard then which has become a fashion now). Shabarimala dress code was not allowed inside college. No one protested then, No special timings for Ramzaan or no 5 time prayer breaks for muslims or anybody demanded it. Some Muslim girls used to wear headscarf's kind of (I guess with their Dupatta), and some dint and were normal like other, but no full body black veil

Why all this cry now about practicing religion ? Practice religion at home or in your places of worship and if this is more important than education, Join some Mata, Madrasa or missionary places and do your religious obligations, do not bring it to a educational institution and spoil the environment by dividing people by spreading religious venom in their mind and create enmity between them.

You brought the past memory lanes back to my eyes. You are right. In the name of religion we have lost a co-existence among our friends. I feel, education must never be winged with religious sentiments else we will lose friends in our society.

As far as I understand and have read, there is no mention in the Holy Quran to cover oneself in the Burqa/Niqab. It is more a custom than religious. Even in Christianity, women are advised to cover their hair while in church attending Holy Mass. We have seen amongst many Hindu women, who cover their head with a saree or dupata in the presence of elders and in temples. But in educational institutions there should be uniform civil code. Once we leave the doorstep of our homes we are all Indians first. Religious practices should be followed at home/places of worship. In most catholic run institutions, one can find images of Jesus Christ, Mother Mary and the crucifix in the classrooms likewise in Hindu run institutions one can find images of various Gods. These are kept not for conversions, but for students to reflect, introspect and implore. We all believe God is present everywhere and in different forms. Modest dressing is important. If the university has banned the Burqa, so have they banned T- shirts and Jeans, there is no offence to any religion. With regards to pray time, students who wish to pray during school hours should compensate by sitting late/early or on Saturdays. There is always an answer to problems. Protesting is no solution.

    Sir RP,
Pls read surah An-Nisa(The women)chapter 4 of Qur'an.Its mentioned clearly for both men and women. Its also mentioned about women's wealth, property ,her status in Islam.Whom can she marry etc.Who can see her if her husband dies etc(only brother, father and son).In simple,Islam treats women like pearl in an oyster.
IT IS THE ISLAMIC BELIEF THAT IF A PERSON HAS TO ENTER JANNAH(PARADISE)THEN CERTAIN TERMS &CONDITIONS TO BE FOLLOWED,amongst them keeping ones mind, soul & BODY Pure.
Muslim philanthropists should think about pharma college. We have engineering, dental, medical and also architectural.Missing pharmacy ones.It will be for the betterment of both communities.

In Arabs the practice of covering their as well as female body was prevalent even before Islam came into existence, the same was taken up later into their books.
They had considered women as possessions rather than as equal partners in those medieval times.

PFI, let your religious practices are restricted to your home and Religious places. Please don't spoil the Image of the institute by creating all this nonsense.

If students or parents actually signed the declaration form, then they dont have right to protest now.. If not then sue college management.

With no intention to disrespect any community, I say that one should adhere to discipline of uniform dress code, of any entity may it be an institution or a workplace.

While selecting a college or workplace, one must ensure if s/he can endure the rules and regulations and then decide to study/work there. Arguing about right to practice your religion after the enrollment, is inappropriate.

The doors are open, if you can't fit-in, please find a suitable place. Why spoil your children's future ? Why wake up now ? When did this rule start ? Just yesterday ?

At the same time, its bias to allow senior students to wear hijab and refuse the same to the first-year students. Rules/regulations must be same to all.

Why do they want to go to such institutions and study. They could have enrolled in a college where such attires are encouraged.
