Mangaluru, Aug 28: Mangaluru South MLA, J R Lobo inaugurated Mangaluru taluk level ‘Dasara’ sports 2016-17' jointly organized by district administration, Zilla panchayat, Taluk panchayat, Mangaluru city corporation, sports and youth welfare department at Mangala stadium here on Sunday, August 28.

Speaking on the occasion J R Lobo said, "I congratulate all the participants for taking part in this sports event. A sport is essential for all, irrespective of their age. It helps to maintain a healthy body. It is a very good stress buster. Encouraging sports in school is the need of the hour. Sadly we have been able to win only few medals in the Olympics.

Our nation is still behind in sports whereas nations smaller than us have gone ahead. Students should give the same amount of importance to sports and other activities as they give to studies. You need to dream big and work hard towards turning your dreams into reality. Schools, parents, government and society will give you all the necessary support. I hope these sportsmen take part in state and national level sports, win at various levels and bring laurel to our nation."

Lilly Pais Pradeep D’Souza from youth service and sports department Mangaluru respectively welcomed and thanked the gathering.

Mangaluru city corporation Mayor K Harinath, president of taluk panchayat Mohammed Monu, KSRTC director, T K Sudhir, Zilla panchayat vice president, Kasturi Panja and others were present.

I agree with some of the comments by the Daijiworld readers. Where is the infrastructure in schools to promote sports. It's a shame on us that even today, in some of the villages there are no proper infrastructure for schools, leave alone sports for that matter. No table, benches, proper ventilation and qualified teachers, worse to worse not even a class room sometime. This is what we called smart city programme for Karnataka. This should be a concern of the whole Karnataka Govt. and not alone of Mr. Lobo.
