Mother Teresa’s canonisation portends more conversions: VHP

New Delhi, Aug 28 (IANS) : Mother Teresa’s canonisation portends more conversions to Christianity, an issue that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have considered before deciding to send a delegation to the Vatican, the VHP said on Sunday.

“The canonisation of Mother Teresa is an alarm bell that now there would be more conversions in India and more funds (for conversions) would be routed to India,” Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) International Joint General Secretary Surendra Jain said.

He said granting of sainthood to a person based on miracles attributed to them was not “practical” in today’s times.

“Do you expect miracles to happen in this age,” he wondered.

Jain warned that with more conversions, there would be more unrest in the society.

He said Modi should have considered the issue before deciding to send an official Indian delegation to the canonisation ceremony at the Vatican.

“The issue of Mother Teresa’s services vis-a-vis religious conversions is not new. We have been raising it for years. I think the Prime Minister should have thought over it before he decided to send an official delegation to the Vatican,” Jain said.

An official Indian delegation led by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is scheduled to attend Mother Teresa’s canonisation ceremony at the Vatican on September 4.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address paid tributes to the late Catholic nun for her services to the poor of India, saying that Indians should be proud that Mother Teresa is being officially declared a saint.

The nun founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation that runs hospices in India. She died in 1997.

Surendra, you too serve lepers like great woman Mother Theresa and convert as many people as you wish to your religion. Do you have guts to step out from your A.C. room and serve the down trodden ? Have you ever sacrificed one meal for less fortunate ? No need to force any one to convert. It is the love and sacrifice of Mother Teresa which neither you nor your Nagpur gang has ever shown to poor and down trodden converts people voluntarily. Wearing kavi or white cloth, sporting lengthy beard, amassing wealth and living in high rise buildings will not inspire people to convert.

What is anyone's problem if one willingly converts from one's religion to another? It is a human right and constitutional right. No one, including VHP, can stop it. People got converted so far not with VHP's permission. Those who wanted to convert did not hesitate to convert because of the fear of VHP or similar groups. In fact, Christianity thrives amidst persecution. These ignorant people remain intoxicated in their ignorance.
If there is any forced or coerced conversion, report them to the legal authorities to deal with them as per the law.
Those who take the law in their hands preach about conversions. Height of stupidity.

what is wrong with that can I ask Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) International Joint General Secretary Surendra Jain?

Surendra Jain isn't it better to love your mother, father, brother, sister and neighbors and coexist peacefully rather than making a COW my mother and forgetting about the MOTHER who gave me birth.

The Christian teaching to love each other hurts you most because then you VHP will not be able to enslave the poor Hindu Dalits and other low caste Hindus.

Now VHP is also nervous as usual, at the news of the canonization of Mother Teresa. One small advice to the VHP: Leave the conversion part to God and to individuals and concentrate on the good of the society, which is not your way, then everything will be fine with you. Leave the bitterness in your heart and your heart will be turned into an heart of flesh instead of stone...

How many thousands of people from Calcutta of different religions were participated?

Sri, you are shedding tears about conversion. I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone in your city or village, go and touch a wandering helpless person, take hold of street children and hug them. Then you talk about the conversion issue.

You and your followers will not look at those helpless people, many kick them from behind but constantly lamenting about " conversion". Did they convert as terrorists and setting fire to the building or killing innocent people in the converted zeal?

By the power of the love of the living JESUS, you will be witnessing conversion in India. None of you can stop that.

Mr. Jain is seems to be an ignorant individual hiding behind Hinduism as being a religion and conversions may take place because of Mother Theresa's sainthood.

First of all Hinduism is not a religion at all but a way of life majority of Indians live and thrive. I have every respect for this way of life and it offers great insights into human living for the betterment of humanity spiritually as well as principled living.

Mother Theresa is a part and partial of hindu way of life and she preached every hinduism doctrine, that means, she in a true sense, upheld hindu way of living both spiritually and physical well being of our brothers and sisters in India and around the world.

While following a Christian order of faith she cherished hinduism.

I would boldly say she is a Hinduism saint by the very definition of Hinduism- A way of Life and indeed a very cherished way of life.

Let all Indians welcome this great honour for all Hindus and Christians and other faiths of India.

    Jai Hind

VHP and its likes I believe reflect the insecurity felt by those who practice rigid thinking at the expense of humanity.

If spirituality is compared to a tea leaf , religions are merely different brands of tea leaves. Ultimately religions should help us and beyond a point should not separate us.

I do not think doing good is restricted to any religion. It should not be. If a particular religion honors a person- that is its internal affairs.

All religions have exemplary examples of humans that serve as role models to others. I do not think VHP or similar entities can be a ROLE MODEL for any one. In a globalized world - I CAN UNDERSTAND VISHWA of VHP means GLOBAL. I do hope the VHP will think Global as religions cannot be and should not be DESI or VIDESI but GLOBAL Ji !

They called MNM as Maun. Now they play hide and seek.
They let the PM speak and then give these statements.
The RSS boss says they love everyone.
Now VHP translation is that they don't love you if you convert.
The PM only feels but cannot express what he feel.
He did express about fake cow catching but it did not go well with any of the cow catching team.
By 2019 the entire picture will change.

In a way..., if i am not mistaken VHP's apprehension about christianity & vulnerability of Hinduism itself is a big testimony about christianity...., this itself reflect the FEKUISM.
Secular mindset hindus must reject the theory of VHP...,

Talking of unrest in the society itself reflect the kind of people who follow VHP (with due apologies reminds me of taliban/syria etc.,)

How on earth can he stoop down to such low levels and allow his moth eaten mind to think of a person who is loved and revered by people all over the world for her selfless service to humanity? This is the cheap and dirty mind of a lowly person. We can only pray for such people.

Excellent comment and pray that Mr. Jain is able to read this comment which may change his thinking and attitude towards people in general & other religions.

Few commentators (like Animka) yesterday on Modi's praise for Mother Theresa had strong suggestions to other commentators. Will you please let us know in light of VHP leaders statement, do you still stand by your suggestions?

It hurts and very unfortunate to have such statement from Mr. Jain and may he wanted to be in news with such condemnable explanation.

How can India's representation face other national leaders and people outside India during canonization ceremony in Rome based on VHP Leaders statement.

It really hurts that when someone without any knowledge or understanding of Catholic faith & sainthood question miracles by saying "“Do you expect miracles to happen in this age,”. Mr. Jain, talk to someone who knows the Canonization process and learn the facts and steps involved.

There is an opportunity for many to learn more about Mother Theresa along with Catholic faith in general. It will help all of us to be a responsible citizens and appreciate those worked in their own way for betterment of our society and help poor without seeking any rewards or appreciation.

Let us pray to Mother Theresa to strengthen our people to dedicate on activities that will help the poor and neglected by caring on their needs and requirements.

What a pathetic statement from a international leader of the VHP. He is not only questioning the credentials of one of the finest women on earth, the most human of human Sr. mother Theresa, who without any discrimination looked after the poorest of the poor, most of whom were HINDUS. Here this man is even questioning the intelligences of Our good PM Mr. Modi, who is doing his best to see a great Secular India. If Mr. Jain has any issues, let him use the wealth of the VHP and do ground level work among the deprived and claim saint hood for himself. Why is he AFRAID of conversion? Let him look at the quality of a converted human being than the quantity of a hatred spewing group. Don't be afraid VHP ..
