Mangaluru: 'Tiger' operation to clear illegal street vendors from Aug 31

Mangaluru, Aug 31: The general session of the city corporation council has taken a decision to begin its drive afresh against unauthorized street vendors who have occupied footpaths at various spots including State Bank in the city. This decision, which will begin on Wednesday August 31, was taken after opposition corporators raised this issue at the session held on Tuesday August 30.

City mayor, Harinath, chaired the session. The corporators said that because of mushrooming of street vendors at places like Mannagudda, central market, State Bank etc, pedestrians are not able to move about freely. They reminded the mayor about the promise he had made in the past to evict illegal street vendors. The corporators criticized the inertia of the city corporation in this matter.

The corporators noted that it has not been possible to mark alternative spots for street vendors. At the same time, ruling party corporators joined the opposition in demanding immediate drive against unauthorized street vendors. Chairperson of health standing committee, Kavita Sanil, said that operation against businessmen who either do not have business licences or have not renewed earlier licences will continue.

After ruling corporators brought pressure on the mayor to undertake action against illegal occupation of canals within the city on Bengaluru model, the mayor asked the town planning cell to provide detailed information on such encroachments. Bad road conditions in city, single site issue etc were also discussed. Harinath said that separate meetings would be convened for discussing single site issue and traffic problems.

The issue of providing food at the night shelters for destitute was also discussed. Corporators said that beggars and destitute would not be allowed to stay by roadsides at night.

Deputy mayor, Sumitra Kariya, and commissioner, Mohammed Nazeer, were present.

    Agreed with the MCC. But what about shops doing business on the roads or prohibited/parking areas. Take the example of JUICE JUNCTION and every passer by will notice as to how the area is more conjusted during the evenings. But still it is going on for years together and no body is bothered about the same including corporators/politicians or MCC personnel. There may be many more shops/businesses like that which functions in Mangalore. MCC should apply its policies to each n every shops equaly then only they can get the support from the public. But whether it is possible?????

    Please there are lots of un hygiene eateries near Valencia _ Kankanaday stretch Please stop them as they there also creating a traffic hazard as persons are just parking vehicles..near these eateries

    Very good move or action to clean up road side/foot-path Vendors.
    Not only removing them but also ensure that new ones will not mushroom.

    Every one has the right to live and earn for their livelihood. Street vendors should get a designated area where they can sell their products.
    But, blocking footpaths and forcing pedestrians to walk on the road causing accidents should come to an end.
    This is not the way civilized cities function.
    What will be the fate of those shop keepers who pay for Trade Licenses, pay heavy rent, pay staff salaries etc., ???
