Beltangady: PM promises to include Tulu in eighth schedule of constitution

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Sep 1: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has reacted positively to the request put forth by a delegation of Tulunadu which met him at New Delhi on Wednesday August 31, to include Tulu in the eighth schedule of Indian Constitution. Once this is done, this language will be recognized as one of the official languages of the country.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, who led the delegation to New Delhi, stated that the PM has promised to take steps on this request at the earliest. He said that the delegation met Modi and handed over a memorandum seeking official language status for Tulu. "Modi told us that the government will soon consider the issue of according recognition to Tulu and some other languages and take a decision on the issue," he said.

Heggade said that the delegation pointed out to the PM that about one crore people settled in Karnataka, Kerala, Mumbai, and other places speak Tulu, when urging him to bring it under the eighth schedule of the constitution. Heggade pleaded with the PM to meet the long-standing demand for giving recognition to Tulu language, duly drawing his attention to the fact that out of 22 official languages, only four are from south India.

The Dharmadhikari also extended invitation to Modi to visit Dharmasthala, duly providing him with details of various society-centric initiatives of the temple, besides handing over pictures of the temple and books giving details about the temple and its activities.

on the same vocation Mr. Hegde would have asked Mr. Modi to protect our Tulu Nadu from outside business targets, which are harmful for the locals- which will going to finish Tulu Nadu. By recognizing language might not be useful after few year where is will not be place at all. Raising industries are killing/demolishing our Tulu Nadu.
if there is no Nadu,,,why recognition of Language.!!

Once I was amazed when a Keralite questioned me, “don’t you know Malayalam? I heard people in Mangalore speak Malayalam.” People from Kochi and beyond do not know there is a language called Tulu spoken by a majority across their northern border. People from Kerala have always felt comfortable when traveling in and around Mangalore. It’s only because Mangaloreans had been too generous in welcoming them. They don’t find any difficulty in traveling to Mangalore by train, bus or flight. On the contrary it’s a nightmare for a poor villager from a remote village in Tulu Nadu to visit the airport or railway station or even a hospital in his native land where security guard or counter staff will start questioning him in Malayalam. Therefore, one of the first steps should be to get the language practically recognized in the state, i.e. by employing maximum Tulu speaking staff in public installations like airport, railway stations, hospitals and govt. offices. Otherwise the language will disappear in our cities and be confined in homes and villages only.

    Dear Tulu speaking people.
language grows and remains if we speak. Most of the tuluvas young generation hesitate or reluctant to speak the language.
They prefer speak in English and assume they get more respect if do so.
