Udupi: UPCL's three units to produce 2,800 MW power by 2020

Udupi, Sep 1 (DHNS): The Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), a subsidiary of Adani Power Limited, has commenced acquisition of 724 acres to set up two more units of 800 MW each at a total cost of Rs 11,500 crore.

UPCL executive director Kishore Alva told the media on Wednesday that out of the 724 acres, the main plant would come up on 168 acres. While 280 acres would be set aside for a green belt and coal handling plant, 276 acres would be used setting up the ash pond.

UPCL has already acquired 69 acres and is going for a final price fixation for the remaining 555 acres, Alva said. The project is expected to be complete by 2020. While Rs 18 crore has already been deposited with the KIADB towards land acquisition, Rs 50 crore has been disbursed as compensation.

Noting that Adani UPCL is paying a compensation of Rs 40 lakh per acre to the land losers for Phase II, Alva said that it is a record in the history of land price fixation in the state.

In addition, the land losers are paid the appreciated values for their structures, horticultural crops and forest trees. Also one or two family members of land losers are given jobs depending on their educational qualification.

At present, the UPCL is operating its thermal power plant with two units of 600 MW each in Yellur and Santhuru villages of Udupi district, meeting 28% of the total requirement (8,000 MW) of electricity of entire state. When completed, UPCL will be supplying 2,800 MW power to the state, the highest by any private power producers.

I am feeling sad that fertile land is sacrificed for thermal plant and ecological imbalance is forced into our green land. I do agree they need sea water, they could have used barren land of Karnataka and pumped sea water...!! We have enough patience to divert water into Yethina hole project!
End of the day...with all such sacrifice city is going to enjoy fruits of electricity and locals at dark with big power cuts! What an irony!!

It is real sad day for coastal Karnataka for allowing such a thermal power plant to be set up in state. Had it been any other state, thermal power plant would not have easily come up. When there are other alternative forms of power generation, why we need such an outdated technology and that too in an ecologically sensitive district. Already one can see the massive destruction it has caused by means of pollution. Since they have already damaged the environment, I request them to pay adequate compensation. Fixing a price of 40 L for such a fertile land is underpay. It is high time at least 60 to 70 L per acre is paid as way of compensation. I request all land owners and stakeholders not to sell cheap by the lure of Adani group. Just go out and check land prices and see how much you need to pay to get even a cent of land and here they are paying such meager amount and doing real estate business years down later by selling the same cheap land to some other industries coming up in future. I request all landowners to fight jointly and not to sell land cheap and sell oneself.
