'Live and let live', SC urges Karnataka to release Cauvery water

New Delhi, Sep 2,(Agencies) : The Supreme Court on Friday urged the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

"Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have to maintain harmony in the water dispute, 'Live and let live,'" said the court.

A three judge bench including Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justices AM Kanwilkar and DY Chandrachud asked Karnataka to inform the court on Monday how much water it can release to Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu government had filed a plea for an urgent judicial direction to the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water to its agricultural lands.

Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah conveyed the state's inability to release Cauvery water for farmers in Tamil Nadu due to deficit rainfall in the river basin area.

The age old decisions need to change including Supreme Court needs to consider when there is enough rainfall there would be no crisis in any state, but deficient rains always cause these disputes.
When there is not enough rainfall then Drinking Water need of the people should be given consideration FIRST than crops.
The govts., can compensate crop loss but no money can buy water to provide unless desalination plants are established.
People First & Crops Next should be the policy. The amount of water in a year should be decided by the tribunal only on the basis of rainfall & level of water in upper catchment areas of that year or months.
Why Chennai floods? Why they didn't store that water to be used when needed?
Why they plant water guzzling crops?
Why they waste water instead of giving water only in needed quantity?
They better change their crops & irrigation method by sending their MLA's on tour of Israel.

Be POSITIVE and stop threats. This is not healthy nor good for the people and communities.

Do not instigate by stating "soon there will be civil fights interstate fights unavoidable" if there is no enough rain.

Let us pray with our lord God that there is enough rain and people are blessed with abundance of water that will be shared with all humanity.

    God bless you.

@Robert - I have one thought. If everyone goes by supreme court verdict say live and let live then I think people of DK may not have issue with yettinahole. Goa may not be having issues with mahadayi and Maharashtra may not be having issues with Krishna. Only recently I am seeing supreme court giving out of the box solution.
But who will enforce same justice everywhere?
Ok. Let us hope positive and pray for raining very well.

No water should be released unless water is released to N. Karnataka farmers.

Let us unite and fight against the step motherly treatment by judiciary, when we ourselves are going through difficult times.

Live and let live- each one must follow this. We come without bringing any thing and we go without taking any thing. Let us use the resource to the extent they are required. Let us learn and make it a habit not to destroy any thing. As much so much should be our need. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

@marol- the phrase live and let live only applies to Karnataka? Why there will be different judgement when the same judges deliver verdict involving Goa and Maharashtra Andhra etc?
