Mangaluru, Sep 4: It is gathered that the inmate of the district prison who was attacked fellow under-trial prisoner, Naushad, happens to be Sarfaraz. Naushad had suffered injuries to his leg and eye in the scuffle as he was hit by a pitcher, and is currently in the hospital for treatment.

Naushad was working as driver in the Gulf region since the last four years. He had come back to his native place two weeks back. He had surrendered in the court relating to an old case. He was lodged in the jail since the last two weeks, and it is said that the order over his bail application was to be passed on Wednesday.

Actual reasons which caused the fight are not known, although it is believed it was over some trivial issue. The attack happened when the jail staff were inspecting the ground floor cells of the prison. Sarfaraz, who was by the side of Naushad, hit the latter, it is said.

The fight inside the jail was one-on-one over some personal differences, and no gangs were involved, it is said. No weapons were used and the fight was physical. A case stands registered against Sarfaraz, who has been accused of attacking the injured prisoner, in Barke police station, said jail superintendent, Krishnamurthy.

As the jail ward in district Wenlock Hospital having four beds is already full, Naushad was accommodated in the general ward, duly handcuffed. Police officials and staff have been ensuring tight security.
