Mangaluru, Sep 4: The Mangaluru Mahanagar unit of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) on Saturday September 3 visited the Infant Jesus Shrine at Bikarnakatte and invited the Carmelite priests and the Catholics of the city for the upcoming Ganesha Chaturthi celebration to be held at Sanghnikethan on September 5.

The Mangaluru Mahanagar Sanghachalak Dr Sathish Rao on behalf of the Sangh handed over the vessel of fruits to the director of the shrine Fr Elias D'Souza and later invited the priests and the gathering by handing over the invitation.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Sangh always worked to harness harmony in the country. Since Independence it has tried to unite the people of the various religions in the nation. Today we have come here to invite you all for the Ganesha Chaturthi celebration to be held in Sangha Nikethan on September 5. The priests of the shrine are very cooperative in organizing this event in the shrine premises which is very promising. We also extend our wishes for the upcoming feast of Nativity on the occasion and wish that Mangaluru be a model to the rest of the nation in Hindu-Christian harmony.”

Speaking on the occasion, Fr Dominic, the former director of the shrine said, “India is the only country in the world which has so many religions. The development of the country is possible only through harmony between the religions and same has been stressed by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We are the brothers and sister and the children of Bharat Mata. We thank RSS for the initiative and also give our best wishes for Ganesha Chaturthi to all the Hindu brethren.”

Deputy director of the shrine, Fr Prakash, chief secretary of Ganeshothsava Samiti Sanghanikethan Satheesh Prabhu, former corporator of MCC and vice-president of Ganeshothsava Samiti Sanghanikethan K Padmanabha, RSS Managaluru Mahanagara Karyavaha Bharath Kumar and others were present on the occasion.

Children along with the others offered flowers to the statue of Infant Mary as a part of nine-day novena for the feast of Nativity in the grotto premises after the proceedings in the presence of RSS leaders.

As a hindu I was feeling very upset when we were branded as idol worshippers in school by the christians and this was by he same christians who had statues in church . For the first time I hear a christian asking the same question that I have been asking al these years.

Christians are affable, caring, loving and most importantly peace loving community. Hindus & Christians have lived & are living in harmony for all these years. Except that some fringe groups in both the communities are creating trouble generally, both the communities are cordial to each other. Also both the communities should realize that there are some people or groups who do not want these two communities to be in good relation. The gesture of inviting Christians to Ganesh Chaturthi celebration, is indeed a noble one & may pave way for further strengthening the bond.

In 2018 Karnataka is going for assembly polls. In some constituency Christan votes are decisive.Mangalore is one among them.

BJP may be a stridently pro-Hindu party, but not in Goa. Even its opposition to the anti-minority job quota was missing here. While the party aggressively campaigns against Congress' promise to raise minority quota in Uttar Pradesh, its mission is to reach out to Christians in the country's smallest state. Around 30% of Goans are Christians.

The same strategy is applied in Karnataka wooing Christians.

So they extend invitation to Ganesha Chaturthi,in the same way Gow Raksha was abandoned in Goa keeping in mind vote share.

What RSS must have forgotten in Maharashtra,Muslims are raising Pandals and doing rituals since pre independence time. How many Muslims has been offered ticket from BJP?

This is beyond common man's understanding. It may damage the Christians same way Muslim Morcha did for Muslims of India.

Christians in Gujarat were living under fear of RSS. They couldnot go to Christmas mass at night. Those believers went to mass at the night didn't come out from the church till next days dawn. The RSS were waiting outside the church to beat the Christians.

GROSS ATROCITIES WERE COMMITTED AGAINST CHRISTIANS DURING THE CHAAIWAALA CHIEF MINISTER.

EVEN TODAY IN GUJARAT RSS ARE HATING CHRISTIANS.

You should be helping us by fact checking if it is true or not. If true, let us agree such are facts and help those who need additional help to practice their faith and religious practices. If not true, let us correct with facts so that people who write such comments take caution to write such comments.

    Hariraj,

Do you want an affidavit about Christians in India were Hindus prior to that ? What fault is today's Christians whose fore-fathers before three-four generations converted to Christianity ? How can you hold today's Christian responsible for conversion or brand them as converts ?

If Christians are to reconvert to Hinduism just because you want the rise in population percentage, how correct is this way but wrong other way ?

Do you know the origin of Hinduism ? Though the spiritual intellects say Hinduism is Sanatan Dharma that had no beginning, how come some tribes who never got exposed to religion continue to worship objects picked from nature ? Have you heard about that ? Sanatan did not come to them naturally, or they left Sanatan Dharma and turned such object worshippers just as a certain number of people turned towards Christianity ?

    Dear Lydia,
You have perhaps misunderstood Harirajs Comment. He said Humanity first. If a religion has part of its belief, the principle of Co existence which is “Do onto others as you would wish them do onto you” then there is no problem whatsoever.if one were to follow this principle he belongs to religion of humanity. I am an agnostic by belief though a born Hindu but as far as possible i try to follow this principle. Do not have an impression that the supporters of Mr Modi are a homogeneous set of people in beliefs. I am not bothered if a person converts but if the religion he converts has as part of its beliefs imposing laws on people other than their fold then i have a problem. I have a problem if the core principles of a religion are totalitarian.I do not think a Moral god would be upset that you pray a stone brick tool or a bird. in my view religion is secondary.

You started nicely by stating "Humanity is first. Religion is secondary" then you stated good people and bad people.

Worldwide, there are thousands of non-Catholic people attend church service and participate in festivities that I have personally seen.

The statement by Joseph that "We Christians don't hate anybody. Let the RSS calm down from its rhetoric's claiming all born in India are Hindus" is very true and valid.

We are hurt by the words and actions of religious fanatics on catholic faith and need several healing steps towards reconciliation and harmony.

Just look at all the photos in this news article, only Dr. Rao is the only who removed his sandals and shows the respect he has for others. These humble gestures go long way in the healing process.

    Mr. David Pais,
In Christianity even bowing your head and praying before a statue is an act of idol worship. Here RSS had invited Christians to attend Ganeshothsava celebrations and not to take part in worship. Even my Hindu friends personally invite me and I do attend if I happen to be in my native place. Thank them and take it positively. Let peace and harmony prevail in society.

    David,

In Christianity idol worship is forbidden but what are we doing having an image of Mother Mary in her infant form, Jesus in infant form (i.e. Infant Jesus Shrine), Jesus in his Crucifix form, statues of various saints - what is this ?

Christianity got to gradual evolving as per Indian method of worship with flowers, garlands, incense sticks, flower/fruit offering, so on.

Many of us may be having a difference of opinion, but this is the truth.

    Good Initiative.Keep it up.
Agreed fully. Outsiders came and sow seeds of hatreds for their personal benefit.
Next time when horrific incidents take place in DK, leaders from all religion should come together and condemn the person or group of people who are responsible for it.
You vote for anyone, it does not matter but if we need peace in D.K. do not give chance to raise their ugly heads again.

Nice to see the smiling faces on all the photographs! It's a very nice gesture from Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) to visit the Infant Jesus Shrine at Bikarnakatte and invite the Carmelite priests and the Catholics of the city for the upcoming Ganesha Chaturthi celebration to be held at Sanghnikethan on September 5th. What else we want rather than religious harmony and respecting each others religion?. May Infant Jesus bless us all.

I don't hold anything against your community or you ?? You must be kidding..

You and me may be picking on each other's point, arguing like cats and dogs but below all of that, there lies a sense of humanity ! That is the reason we are here responding to gestures such as this. Else, we would have been working in some terror groups !

    Have a nice day....

RSS was from the beginning, for communal harmony and Hindu unity. The main agenda was to remove caste system within Hindu religions and bring everyone into the mainstream.
However, some misguided individuals like Thogadia and Muthalic misunderstood the phrase 'Hindu unity'. They thought it was uniting Hindus against other religions.
Anyways, now this is a good beginning. Hindus and Christians should unitedly fight evil forces trying to engulf the whole word in the recent days.

Hey Guys, Dont get swayed by this huge photo opportunity. We have always taken part in their celebrations, Respected all religions & have been happy for them. This is a total eyewash , hog wash if you please & very craftily done. Remember Feku , he has no voice . A real touching gesture would be if the R.S.S chief had come out & apologized for his senseless comments about Mother Theresa . Please do not get swayed by such Rhetoric. Feku is nothing but a meek mortal in front of the R.S.S & has no voice at all. Remember he does not voice any opinion to Sakshimaraj or yogendra or any of his minister. All these dramatics is done with a ulterior motive, with a opportunity for the shutterbugs ,to be busy ,so that they may splash the newspapers & mags with front page , displays. We have never ever differentiated between religions. I for one would be convinced only if their chief were to take back his words & apologize for his insensitive rude remarks. Please continue to amuse them but be on the guard.

A good begginning of showing respect to other religions instead of dividing our country on religiouus lines. High time the BJP also discards the divisive agenda and concentrates on uniting people of different faiths so that we as a country can realise our potential in the comity of nations. Mera Bharat Mahaan.
