Bantwal, Sep 4: The court here has sentenced a bus driver to six months of imprisonment besides imposing fine of Rs 5,000 on him. It handed down this sentence after finding that over speeding and reckless driving charges levelled against the driver were proved.

Driver of the bus, Harish Kumar (26), resident of Hosakatte in Goltamajalu village, has convicted in the case.

The case relates to collision of a bus and Maruti Omni van at Mani Junction in the taluk in 2011. On December 7 that year, a private bus had hit the van, resulting in the deaths of Sabeena Banu and Rafoque from Mardhala on the spot. Yakub, Hameed, Shiyabu from Kerala, along with sons, Nehal (4) and Naseera (7), had suffered grievous injuries. 

Vittal police, who registered the case, had charged the bus driver of over speeding and reckless driving. The ACJ and JMFC court here, which conducted the trial, concluded that the bus driver was at fault and accordingly sentenced him.

Advocate, Shaukat Ali, had represented the prosecution in the case.
