Mangaluru, Sep 6: Several people blocked garbage handling vehicles belonging to Antony Waste Handling Company near Doddamane in Bangrakulur here on Sunday September 4. They put forth various demands like vehicles of the said company should not be parked in the area, road repair work should be undertaken, and such other demands.

At the spot of protest, there was verbal friction ensued between the staff of Antony Waste Handling Company to which the work of garbage disposal in the city has been entrusted, and protestors. Kavoor police station inspector, Nataraj, and other police held talks with the concerned, and succeeded in convincing the protestors to allow compactor and high lift vehicles handling garbage to move out. The people said that they would write to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, drawing his attention towards the failure of the local city corporation in taking effective steps to maintain environmental cleanliness.

The protestors staged the garbage disposal vehicles are being parked in 1.05 acres of land in Doddamane amid populated areas. They said that cleaning of vehicles there pollutes climate and the area faces the prospects of spread of infectious diseases. "There have been many dengue and malaria cases here. Because of terrible stench, other vehicles dither to come to this spot on hire. The parking here suffers from lack of space as the company has employed 167 vehicles," they rued.

The protestors said that people working in these vehicles belong to plains of the state and they stay in rented houses. Some of them engage in theft, robbery, ganja etc at night, as a result of which 300 families living in the region are facing critical situation, they stated.

They warned of boycotting coming corporation and assembly elections if steps are not taken to repair Kulur-Doddakmane road which has been damaged due to movement of garbage trucks, and parking problem is addressed.
