Bengaluru, Sep 7: 12 women admitted into K C General Hospital at Malleshwaram here turned sick after being administered with Pantoprazole injections, which are used to treat symptoms like heartburn, extra stomach acid, difficulty in swallowing etc on the evening of Monday September 5.

The patients admitted into the women's ward for various problems including viral fever were given the above injection along with IV fluid. Within hours, they started to complain of vomiting, headache, vertigo etc. This gave rise to panic among their relatives of the patients after which the senior doctors were informed.

Hospital superintendent, Dr Manjunath, and resident medical officer, Dr Ravikumar, rushed to the hospital, shifted the women to intensive care unit, and treated them. They are showing signs of improvement in health condition.

It is gathered that K C General Hospital has stock of 10,000 vials of Pantoprazole belonging to a single batch. This stock was taken out for use since some days. Hospital doctors said that vial samples have been sent to drug controller for testing.

Medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Manjunath, said that there is no need for the relatives of the patients to worry. He said that investigations are being conducted to know the exact cause for the drug reaction among the patients and that the injection vials have been sent for testing. He added that once the report is received, everything will become clear, but in the meanwhile, the patients are in good health and hence there is no need for panic.
