Udupi, Sep 9: The central government, which had chosen 75 from among 600 districts of the country for survey, has come out with the cleanest and filthy districts of the country. The list was announced on Thursday September 8.

Udupi has got pride of place in the list, by gaining spot among the top ten cleanest districts.

Gadag, home district of rural development minister, H K Patil, has earned the dubious distinction of being one of the most unhygienic districts by being listed at the fag end of the list of 75 districts.

National Sample Survey Organization had conducted the survey of 75 districts based on availability and use of toilets, littering, and stagnant water at homes. The report was released on Thursday by union rural development minister, Narendra Singh Tomar.

The survey was conducted by dividing the districts into plains and hilly regions.

Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra has topped in the districts from plains considered the cleanest, while Satara, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Thane district from Maharashtra have occupied places behind it. Nadia, Midnapore (east), and Hoogli districts of West Bengal, Udupi from Karnataka and Churu (Rajastan) are in top ten places.

Among the hilly districts, Mandi in Himachal Pradesh has occupied top spot.

In the less clean districts, Bikaner from Rajastan is at the top with Gadag occupying 75th place. The minister said that the districts at the tail end of the list have achieved less in cleanliness programmes among the clean districts.
