State rushes to Supreme Court seeking immediate hearing over Cauvery

New Delhi, Sep 11 (DHNS): The state government on Saturday rushed to the Supreme Court seeking immediate hearing of its plea to restrict the release of Cauvery water to 10,000 cusecs per day for six days only.

The state government contended that Karnataka is facing a distress situation and is suffering a loss of Rs 500 crore per day due to the massive agitation.

Karnataka sought modification of the apex court’s September 5 order asking the state to release 15,000 cusecs of water for 10 days as an immediate measure to help farmers in Tami Nadu. The state government’s counsel filed the application before the Supreme Court registrar, who is likely to register it on Sunday.

Protests on Saturday

The state maintained that the farmlands coming under the four reservoirs in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka require about 40 tmcft by the end of October, but storage as of now was only 39 tmcft.

The water expected to be released by Karnataka is 1,50,000 cusecs at the rate of 15,000 cusecs in 10 days, and the record showed that between September 5 and 10, the state has released 34,529 cusecs.
