Mangaluru, Sep 11: Indian Coast Guard unit here, which at present, has been entrusted with the onus of guarding the coastline of the region, launched a scheme on Saturday September 10 under which the local unit of the Coast Guard will be keeping vigil on the skies with the city as its centre of activity.

On this occasion, president of Coast Guard Officers Women's Association president, Urmila Singh, Coast Guard additional director general, K Natarajan, and Coast Guard commandant, P K Jaswal, and others were present.

The chartered aircraft of Coast Guard would be keeping an eye on the developments, pooling information and sending the same to the department for enabling it to take prompt action. The aircraft will keep watch on security, oil leakage, piracy, protection of fishermen etc.

Sea trade is increasing on the New Mangalore port, Karwar, Mumbai line, as a result of which Coast Guard has been vested with additional responsibility of providing protection and ensuring safety at sea. The Coast Guard here will be using the old airport in the city for parking its chartered aircrafts and operate flights from there, it was informed.
