Mangaluru, Sep 14: “Six lac hectare of agricultural land in the state is converted in the last ten years for other purposes,” said Karnataka agriculture price commission president Dr Prakash Kammaradi.

“The information is found in the study conducted by the commission regarding direction and ways to prevent conversion of agricultural land. The commission will soon submit the report to the government,”
he said.

“There is also fluctuation in proportion of area used for various crops. The land used for agriculture has decreased by 9% in Dakshina Kannada during the last ten years. Out of agricultural land 5,193 hectare land is converted in the district for other purposes. Meanwhile there is an increase of 17,306 hectares of land used for horticulture. There is an increase of nine hectares for areca and 2,127 hectares for coconut cultivation. The area used for banana cultivation is increased by 11% and cashew by 17% while that for mango cultivation is decreased by 12%,” he said.
