Bengaluru, Sep 15 (DHNS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal underwent an operation at the Narayana Health City in Bengaluru on Wednesday, for his persistent cough.

He is doing well following the intervention, doctors attending on him said. Kejriwal has had the chronic cough for the last four decades.

According to a Hospital release, “the surgery corrected an anatomical abnormality of his oral-pharyngeal and palatal area, which was causing small amounts of saliva to trickle into his air passages whenever his nose breathing was affected by allergy or other factors (sic)."

Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) told DH that the Hospital authorities themselves approached him with what could be a possible solution to the problem.

Dr Paul C Salins, Medical Director and Vice President, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center, Narayana Health City diagnosed the abnormal condition after observing his coughing bouts. This was confirmed by detailed computer analytics of cephalometrics, modeling simulation, also dynamic MRI and Video Fluroscopic examinations, the release said.

It was found that restricted space for the movement of his tongue and an enlarged soft palate and uvula and a slight increase in the volume of the tongue caused the irritation. “The surgery involved correction of a significant septal spur and the palato-pharyngeal correction along with repositioning the tongue base relationship by reorganisation of the chin area. The aim of the correction was functional restoration rather than that of a disease (sic),” according to the Hospital.
