Mangaluru, Sep 15: "If any doctor or any hospital is found practising unethical measures while treating a patient, then they will be punished mercilessly till this government is in power," warned K R Ramesh Kumar, health and family welfare, government of Karnataka.

He was addressing the gathering after handing over the certificate of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) to Indiana Hospital for its excellence in patient care and infrastructure, in the premises on Thursday, September 15.

"Today we see private hospitals keeping a dead body in the ventilator to increase the bill or shifting a patient to ICU for no reason. I do not say that all private hospitals are doing this, but there are many in the state. A patient is diagnosed on the basis of his stature, his designation and not on the merit of his illness. We do not have a clear guidelines in regard to the fee structure or guidelines for punishing a doctor. We must interrogate ourselves that do we charge the apt free structure for the diagnosis we make." he added.

"The government utilises a large amounts of funds for a common man's healthcare and still he is unable to get it. I do not point my finger at every private hospital. I call upon every doctor to read his Hippocratic Oath so that he does not forget the ethics and replicates the same in a patient’s treatment. I urge the doctors that they must have the fear of the God and the society which make them." he said.

"The fruit of the NABH accreditation lies in giving humane treatment to the patient and that is not mentioned in the certificate. I wish that the Indiana hospital be a temple of health to its patients and let it treat a human as a human with a humane touch," congratulating Indiana hospital on this occasion.

The managing director of Indiana Hospital Dr Yousuf Kumble while explaining the various benefits of NABH accreditation said "NABH assesses mainly the service of the hospital and not the infrastructure as the prime concern. It is done how ethically a hospital treats its patients. So far only 403 hospitals in whole of India have been accredited by NABH and Indiana Hospital took 18 months to implement its quality protocols. The hard work was rewarded when NABH accredited the Hospital in July 2016."

"Indiana Hospital is using this as a tool to make a difference in the healthcare scenario in Mangaluru by ensuring the best possible outcomes for its patients" added Dr Yousuf.

Dr Yousuf also welcomed the guests and the vote of thanks was rendered by chairman of the hospital Dr Ali Kumble.

In-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada Ramanatha Rai, chief whip of Karnataka legislative council Ivan D'souza, MLA JR Lobo and others were present at the occasion.

Earlier, Ramesh Kumar, while he was on a visit to minister U T Khader's house, had talked on the same subject while interacting with the media. “Health facilities are a right of individual. If any citizen fails to avail medical facilities due to lack of financial support, it is an insult to society," he said.

Answering a question on why Mukhyamantrigala Santwana Harish Yojana has failed, Ramesh Kumar said “Mukhyamantrigala Santwana Harish Yojana has not failed but not effectively implemented. There many such programmes in which there may be confusions. Hence to implement this effectively we were thinking for a new health policy to bring all the programmes under single umbrella."

On Cauvery issue he also did that “Supreme Court has given interim order. It is necessary for government to follow the order. When we have constitutionally accepted the Supreme Court as supreme, we should follow its order. Several people have sacrificed for the integrity of the country. We should protect integrity of this nation. We should think beyond politically on this issue."

First of all let me Congratulate the Management and the Team members of Indiana Hospital, Mangaluru on this special occasion of obtaining certificate of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH)
I really appreciate the statement given by K.R.Ramesh Kumar, minister for Health and Family welfare, Karnataka government that hospital is found practicing unethical measures while treating a patient and “Today we see private hospitals keeping a dead body in the ventilator to increase the bill or shifting a patient to ICU for no reason. I do not say that all private hospitals are doing this, but there are many in the state. A patient is diagnosed on the basis of his stature, his designation and not on the merit of his illness.
This practice is being followed by most of the private hospitals in the country in general and Mangaluru city in particular just to enhance the revenue of the hospital. By increasing the revenue in this illegal, there are many multispecialty deluxe, luxurious royal hospitals are coming up like anything as the each day passes. This is the common trend what is happening in and around the city. Shifting to ICU, putting the patient on ventilator with no apparent illnesses etc are the day today affairs. Poor patient party has to die without any clue of the treatment or illness. It is true that now a days all the hospitals have become money spinning centers than diagnostics centres. No professionalism and concern towards the patient. Their main aim/object is to lure the money from the patient party. Bottom line is operation success, patient died. Patient party cannot question the hospitals, why it is so. Their simple answer is, we have provided you very best services available in the country. This type of rudeness, unethical practices are very common in almost all the hospitals except few. Their aim is just to reach their target.
My only one request with the concerned authorities to display all the price structure in the board for each and every treatment available in the hospital in order to avoid any confusion or inconvenience to the patient party. If this is done, patient party can decide well in advance whether or not to go for particular treatment or surgery.

Congratulations to the Management and the Team members of Indiana Hospital, Mangaluru on this special occasion.

There is generally an impression among the practicing Medical professional personnel in this part of India that NABH Certification is all about the Infrastructure requirements and not the service of the hospital , managing director of Indiana Hospital Dr Yousuf Kumble who has explained the various benefits of NABH accreditation has clearly informed us that "NABH assesses mainly the service of the hospital and not the infrastructure as the prime concern”.

I personally feel that Indiana Hospital, Mangaluru must deliver Quality service proportionate with the charges for the treatment and uphold this motto of Quality service required as per the NABH accreditation norms.

We wish all the best to the Management and the Team members in this regard and look forward to Quality service to all the patients in the days ahead.

If doctors show concern to poor, how can they build such huge hospitals in prime locations of Mangalore?
