Shivaprasad Alva appointed as special government prosecutor

Puttur, Sep 15: The suicide case of then newly married woman at Mareel of Kemminje in Puttur five years ago, has taken a curious turn. The court has appointed senior legal officer in Mangaluru, Shivaprasad Alva, as special government prosecutor to argue for the prosecution.

Kusuma alias Swetha, daughter of Sheshappa Gowda from Manyadka Moorulya in Sullia taluk, had committed suicide in a rented house at Mareel in Kemminje February 16, 2011.

Sheshappa had filed a complaint with the police about Mohan Gowda, the husband of his daughter, who harassed her for dowry and inflicted physical and mental pain on her thus inciting suicide. Puttur town police registered a complaint, arrested Mohan Gowda, and submitted a charge sheet to the court.

Mohan Gowda later came out on bail, but absconded without appearing for further court hearings. He was found and arrested again as per court orders and presented in the court. The sessions court rejected his bail plea. However he obtained a bail from the High Court and absconded once again without appearing for a court hearing. The police have spread a net to nab him for the third time now.

The hearing in the case is being held in the fifth additional district court in Puttur. Special government prosecutor, Shivaprasad Alva, a resident of Darbe Kaverikatte, has been appointed now for the case. He has worked as an assistant government prosecutor and later, as a government prosecutor in Puttur court. He is now working as a senior legal officer in Mangaluru.

The appointment of Shivaprasad, who is instrumental in obtaining severe punishment for convicts after effectively arguing their cases in the courts, has aroused curiosity.
