Bahrain gives Rs 8.87 lac to Odisha tribal Dana Manjhi

New Delhi, Sep 16 (DHNS): The Kingdom of Bahrain on Thursday offered a red carpet welcome and donated Rs 8.87 lac to a Odisha tribal who was forced to carry his wife’s body for nearly 12 km, en route to his village, after she died at a hospital last month.

A video of Dana Manjhi walking with a wailing daughter and wife’s body over his shoulder after help eluded him went viral last month, sparking national outrage.

The video caught the attention of the international media too. Moved by the plight, Bahrain prime minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa offered help to Manjhi, who received the cheque at the country’s embassy here.

An illiterate marginal farmer from Kalahandi district, Manjhi has so far been struggling to earn Rs 2,000 a month and has never even visited Bhubaneswar.

“I have never visited New Delhi or Bhubaneswar. I do not know who donated the money. But I was told, after seeing my plight, the Bahrain Prince gave me the money,” he said. The flood of donations and the near-celebrity status has left him bemused.

Dressed in a wrinkled shirt and a dhoti, Manjhi told reporters: “I don’t know how many zeros are there in nine lac rupees. I will educate them (daughters). They should have a better life. If I had the money, I would not have suffered this much.”

Reports stated that the Odisha government has issued a work order worth Rs 75,000 under the Indira Awas Yojana and has alloted a plot.

While the state government has also promised to bear the cost of educating his daughters, the Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), too, promised free education to Manjhi’s children.

Bahrain rulers - an extra ordinary example of humanity, love, peace and generosity. Indian leaders and billionaires should learn from these rulers how to share the gifts God bestowed upon them, instead of building tallest buildings for them and for their families. Words are not enough to praise kind hearted Khalifa family. May Almighty God bless rulers of Bahrain with peace, prosperity, security and best of health.....Amen.

This is a slap to our own Central, State government.

Our Central govt. in order to spread its influence is offering loan to other friendly countries where as the govt. is not taking care of its own citizens.

When Manjit had carrying his dead wife body for 12 kms for her last rites and his one daughter was sobbing in that entire walk of 12 kms, there were not a single so called nationalist.

Where are those savior of culture, society who are prepared to die. All chor to the core.

I wish Manjit and his children will lead a better life. For press people, this is a very exciting news, Also they have brought the real face of our own people characters.

Thank you Bahrain and God Bless you for helping this poor man. I remember Bahrain gave a significant amount(Almost A lac many many years back) to our church located near Mangalore outskirts but sadly I was told when Bahrain top dignitary came very close to our town few years back for some important function not a single rose was offered or sent to this Dignitary as thanksgiving by our representatives in church (A rare opportunity to thank)! . This is ungrateful behavior ! Leave alone these people there !. sacred heart church and Jesus Christ has and will pour all blessings on Bahrain and its prosperity and we are grateful to them always.

In this issue, I admire the steps taken by Dharmasthala Temple. They have diverted a lot of funds towards education. The poor students studied in their Gurukul at Ujire have reached to good positions throughout world.

Nice, instead of running schemes for BPL people in india, govt should directly give 1 cr for each one & make them rich once for all. Probably india could save much more than what they are spending.
