Mangaluru, Sep 18: "Educational institutions including universities, besides being centres for imparting knowledge, should also shoulder the additional responsibility of advocating and propagating India's development-oriented initiatives," stressed governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, at the sixth annual convocation of Nitte University held at K S Hegde Auditorium, Deralakatte near here on Saturday September 17.
Acharya felt that educational institutions are functioning like factories because of following British system of education. "Students coming out of these institutions are like manufactured materials. Many a time they roam around without jobs. A sea change needs to be brought in the educational system in our country. We should become people who create jobs by imparting skill development oriented education. The central government has been laying emphasis in this area. Our country has a population of 26 percent that is deprived of education. In rural areas and slums in cities, the number of people getting education is far from satisfactory, and there has been an increase in the quantum of school drop outs. We are also witnessing sluggishness in the number of people opting for higher education. Therefore, educational institutions should take up the work of giving education backed by human values and skill development. People are sure to succeed if they get properly oriented towards their future goals in their student days," he stated.
He hailed Nitte University under the able leadership of N Vinaya Hegde for emerging as a premier educational institution, and earning recognition as a pioneer in medical field, and in meeting the aspirations which are expected of a university.
Students with top performances, Dr Adrija Kar. Dr Anita Prescilla D'Souza, Dr Parvathi S Pillai, Shreelaxmi Shenoy K, Satyashree R P, Archana Gautham, Caraline D'Souza, Ayesha Aiba and several others were presented with gold medals and four gold medals sponsored by endowments.
Degrees were conferred on 636 students on the occasion. The split figures are 18 PhDs, 161 medical, 140 dental, 10 pharmacy, 28 physiotherapy, 38 allied health sciences, 16 journalism and mass communications, and 17 biological sciences.
Nitte University chancellor, N Vinaya Hegde, who presided over the programme, handed over degree certificates to students. Pro chancellor, Dr M Shantaram Shetty, participated as chief guest. Vice chancellor, S Ramananda Shetty, welcomed. Senior neurologist, Dr K R Shetty, registrar, Dr M S Moodithaya and others were present.
Director of curriculum, Dr Rajashekhar, presented the programme.
