Mangaluru, Sep 19: Addressing a press conference here on Sunday September 18, deputy commissioner (crime and traffic), Dr Sanjeev Patil, said that a detailed plan of action was drafted at a meeting held on Saturday for streamlining overall traffic system in the city.

The press conference was held in the office of the city police commissioner. "We have been receiving complaints that buses do not halt at scheduled bus stops, shrill horns are being used unnecessarily, vehicles are driven recklessly etc. We have given strict instructions that passengers should wait only at the bus stops and board buses there. Bus drivers also have to stop at bus stops alone," he sated.

To ease the traffic, he said, buses have been asked to take only the left lane at Pumpwell, Kuntikan, Kottara Chowki etc. There is demand to create satellite bus stand and bus terminal for buses coming from Udupi and Kerala directions. Instructions will be passed to all the buses not to stop near PVS circle from 8 am to 8 pm. 69 commercial complexes in city have no underground parking facility, compelling visitors to park in the roads, he noted.

He added that vehicles including those carrying school children, which move on opposite direction at Yekkur have causing frequent accidents. On Saturday, ten vehicles have been booked for this offence, and the drive against this practice will continue, he stated.

    It is a welcome move by the Traffic Deputy Commissioner Dr. Patil to unfold a plan to regulate and de congest Road Traffic in Mangalore City. How ever we have to see the execution part, that shall be interesting as we Mangaloreans are used to pot holes like Moon craters, speed like Rajadhani express and we are always in a hurry like an Ambulance. We are proud to be called expert Drivers, cruising around without bruising our vehicles, negotiating between small and big vehicles and also the pedestrians who are forced to hop around the road in the absence of foot paths or due to the invasion of space by parking vehicles. God bless him.

    Punish all those RTO's /DC/Who served Mangalore. They who permitted to build huge buildings/commercial centers by taking huge amount of bribe. From Nanthoor to Bunts hostel & Nanthoor to Balmat road, Nantoor to Kankandy, all the Buildings are on the edge of the road. because of this Very reasons, the traffic of Mangalore gets worse n worse. Demolish all these buildings and expand the roads. Jai ho Political leaders/ DC/ RTO and other personals.

    The police should book four wheelers parked on the entire Mother Teresa road erstwhile Falnir road. People have no place to walk on this road. There are so many places in Mangaluru where cars are parked on footpaths. Best example is Light house hill road outside Maximus building. The police should ensure that such motorists should be fined. Our police are more interested only on nabbing rides without helmet.

    I do not think we can easily solve the traffic problems in Mangalore. I say this with conviction because proper planning ad foresight cannot under the prevailing power dynamic situation prevail over the " hen which lays the perpetual golden eggs to powers in DK)

    Adhoc planning and perpetual problems - IS THE HEN that lays golden eggs for the beneficiaries. Why would they change their ways?

    All this rhetoric is temporary when a new official takes over the dept and but then everything goes back to what it was......

    Any infrastructural project based on solid merit will not move forward even though they would almost certainly ease congestion.

    First of all repair roads remove small circles. make free left turns. big circles put traffic signals. Old clock tower circle there is bottle neck remove electric pole ( near hotel). our officers are sleeping. i will give you best example national highway panambur beach entry point big pot hole no body bothers to fill. bykampady railway bridge towards deepak pump big pot hole. every year same problem in same spot. no strome water trench that creates water logging no body bothers. you can't see national highway in this condition anywhere in the world shame on us

    The traffic police in Mangaluru are very lenient.Seems like everybody knows them personally.Only other state registered vehicles are booked.Potholes do not allow fast movement of traffic.I think police and MCC should work together in finding a solution.

    Our intelegent civil engineers built roads without footpaths earlier, forget about road side parking area. After many complaints from pedestrians now someone woken up to make footpaths, narrowing already narrow roads at some places. I wnated to go to one doctor opposite Rupa Hotel in Hampankatta, from Jyothi circle itself vehiles were parked and I had to move further, passed Hampankatta still no place, thought turnig back near Central talkis and there round about was jamed with Autos and two wheelers, took R.T.O circle came back, near Syndicate bank took U turn and on front of Taj took left, no place again from Milagres lane came up and up to light house hill road, all K.M C. students and staff vehicles, came back to Jyothi and took right again thinking somewere I may get place. Finally parked near Milagres church. We are talking about no parking there no parking here, then where to park ? Specially for an elderly person like me it is really a strugle. This all because all office goers coming in cars in the morning and parking there till night. Make paid car parking every where like in other places. Good income, which can be used for maintenance of roads.

    No traffic inspector will succeed to control Mangalore traffic unless the service bus stand , RTO office DC office and Wholesale vegetable market must shift outskirts of Mangalore city limit.Otherwise all affords will be no use. & in vain.

    I suggest prevention of private vehicles into the city like Mangalore where the roads are very narrow and no proper parking for private vehicles inside the city. Private vehicles coming from Udupi , Kerala and from B.C Road should have separate parking facilities at the outskirt of the city. Only Public transport buses, School buses, auto, taxi, ambulance, govt office vehicles should be allowed to enter the city. Private vehicles should be parked outside the city and the commuters should depend public transport to enter the city.IF WE HAVE A WILL THERE IS A WAY.

    First improve the roads and then traffic.. ...
    the mangalore roads are in very worst condition. There is no drainage no walkway no parking areas.

    Only keeping traffic inspector every corner of the road and collecting money will not improve the traffic.

    After all the traffic rules,road rules etc etc the more priority is educating the drivers specially bus drivers rickshaw drivers of Mnagalore .I find that often when i drive on Mangalore roads .There is no respect or concern for other drivers on the road .Their target is different. Smart city needs to bring the awareness to drivers . Because many rules can be brought but front line people who implementing are the drivers!!!.

    Am also one of the victim of who driven wrong way but no other option why the highway road transport authority has not provided with proper service road, we have spent Rs 20 extra per day for fuel in expensive days also time consumed as i have to pick my child from school i rushed violating the rule please concerned authority find a solution for this problem

    hello, it's not an excuse. Opponent can not be paid for authorities mistake. you can blame authorities for the mistake you are doing. boss, traffic on roads will be smooth if you come out all these small small wrong thoughts. Over seas or many smart cities, you need to drive a km or 2 to take a U turn. It's for all, not for you only. everybody should adhere to that. you want to escape, come from wrong side... you hit some guy coming from right direction... you both penalize for no mistakes of yours... so if we need smooth traffic move, we need to change our mentality. come of out all these mind set. you may save 20 rs boss, if met with an accident , may have to spend in lacs or may close your life... please remember that. LEt's not show excuses for our mistakes.

    Construction of Proposed Bus Stand near Pumpwell must be started and completed ASAP.
    Make service buses not to enter city at all.
    While giving construction permission for commercial buildings, make mandatory that they should have at least one floor as pay parking and compensate them by giving additional floor on the top.

    Roads are widened for the cars to move.
    Footpaths are built for the same of young and old to walk.
    If cars are parked on the footpaths where and how do you expect us to walk.
    Please put up appropriate boards for NO PARKING and make towing regular .

    WHY ONLY HOSPITAL VISITORS PARKING ON ROAD ALL MAJOR SHOP CUSTOMERS , CAR AND VEHICLE SHOW ROOMS CUSTOMERS ARE PARKING ON ROADS ONLY. THESE SHOPS PARKING AREA IS USED FOR SERVICE WORK SHOPS. IN MCC LAY OUT DRAWING EVERY SHOP IS MARKED WITH PARKING AREA BUT PHYSICALLY IT IS USED FOR HOPPING PURPOSE . WHY BECAUSE ALL MCC OFFICERS ARE POCKETED BY SHOP KEEPERS, ITS ALL POLITICAL BACKUP , TRAFFIC CONTORLL PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS POINT ALSO, CHECK THE FRONT SIDE OF ALL VEHICLE SHOW ROOMS IN MANGALORE.

    Why are traffic signals missing at junctions which is major cause of blockage/jams. Why cant we place traffic signals to avoid deadlocks. I could see deadlocks happening everyday at Kankanady Bendorwell and Bunts Hostel junctions. Check cities like Hong kong where even a very narrow roads have traffic signals and road jams are almost zero !

    It's very true that Mangaluru's traffic (movement & management) is very, very indisciplined, messy & scary/life-threatening.

    Merely setting out rules/guidelines makes no sense, unless these are strictly enforced. Traffic discipline is badly lacking. Hope we take the cue from some of our neighbouring countries (except Somalia).

    It does not require rocket science knowledge to set right the Traffic problems in this 100% literate city !
    The Police should
    a) Clamp down on Unsafe driving ,lane cutting,stopping anywhere n everywhere,blaring horns,crossing yellow lines at signals,having proper n legible number plates and all vehicle lights in working condition.
    b) Remove all banners hung on Electrical poles which sway in the wind and cause accidents and injure Passengers .
    c) Buses should get into their parking Bays and should not be allowed to stop a second more after they have dropped and picked up the passengers , this will allow them to maintain their timings without hurtling down our already overcrowded streets.
    Police should use their Walkie talkies to nab the Erring drivers, they could move around in unmarked vehicles also.
    The Buses are found to park their Busses right in the middle of the road and blocking traffic.(this is seen at Kottara,Urwa market ,Lady hill ,Lalbagh and SDM college stop also.I am sure this disease is spread all over the City(but this is the Road I normally use).
    With more than 70 to 80 vehicles registered everyday,,We are heading for a Standstill Traffic situation.
    Many drive without lights switched on, even after 7 pm....
    Conduct Special drives n enforce the law .
    Will certainly make driving here, stress and noise free.

    I would also like to bring to the notice of all concerned that there are three major hospitals in Kadri area in which the parking is converted into commercial shops. Thus all hospital visitors go to park their cars on the road. This too causes lot of problem in this area. couple of these hospitals were opened in the last few years and how is that MCC has given them permission with out parking within the compound.

    I can believe the police if they can take to task these hospitals - just keep fining the parked cars in front of these violators. But I guess police cannot take strict action against the hospitals.

    Perhaps a PIL against these hospitals is in the interest of Mangalorean public ? Again who will bell the cat? ( as the saying goes)

    Not only planning also ensure that people/vehicles follow and adhere to the Traffic rules & regulation strictly. Penalize heavily on those who break the traffic rules and create nuisance and hardship to public.
    Sort of relief to general public. Let us hope that things move in a right direction as planned. Mangalore population and vehicles have shot up tremendously during the past few decades and this is the right time to come out with proper infrastructure and planning.

    is it... are you sure Deputy Commissioner ? Today I was driving via all the places you mentioned and didn't see any changes in the driver's attitudes. Same recklessness, same competition... I could see... no changes unfortunately. Please act very very strictly and then only these buffalos will realize some action for them kind of. Make all the traffic rules very very strict. Automatically things will change. So many stupid things on out way... immediate after the barricade there comes the bus stop. Busses stop immediately and whole traffic is blocked till he moves. Move the bus stops far away from the junctions , especially where there barricades are kept. Please stop all wrong direction vehicles. so many place we see people coming from wrong directions... kottara chowki, nanthoor, yekkoor, kuloor, on NH approaching thokkottu... so many places... penalize them heavily. automatically it stops. Stop and Penalise all express and local busses for unnecessary horning also. So many places... balmmata, urvastore, kottara... all these places you see them horning... targeting the vehicle or bus in front of them. unfortunately everybody else responds closing their ears except the next bus driver who acts deaf. Horning will continue till the next bus moves... they dare to do all these
    on road assuming road is their ancestors. And no one from public will dare to question them. because if somebody does they scold them back with very bad words, mostly words are of below the belts. So, public will avoid sitting quite. It's you who has the power should act on these goons so called drivers.

    The only action plan that the traffic department has been imposing in Mangalore is creating one ways, no entries and adding no parking signs.
    I am yet to see any better plan. This kind of negative attitude of "no, No, No" is not not going to help. They should find out ways to accommodate needs of people instead of banning the necessities.

    Only rickshaw people get priority in parking places and the traffic people seem to be not even interested to know the legality of these self allotted spaces.
