Kundapur: Promises to make highway safe after Trasi tragedy, forgotten

Kundapur, Sep 21: The Movady cross tragedy three months ago that took away the lives of eight young school children had created fear not only in the state but also abroad. The tears of the parents of deceased children have not yet dried up, yet the highway has seen no changes in road safety though people representatives and officials had gone around and promised several measures to make travelling safe.

The wheel of Maruthi Omni vehicle which was ferrying children to Don Bosco English medium school at Mukka on June 21, three months ago had got stuck in the pothole in the beginning of the journey. The driver hastened to cover the time lost and was rushing towards the school so that the children reach in time. Meanwhile the speeding private bus collided with the vehicle at Movadi cross.

The tragedy shook the state. The process of laying down restrictions on the number of children that can be ferried in vehicles with Nakabandi was started immediately after it. There were speed restrictions through barricades at a gap of one km even on highways and rural roads where the vehicles could be driven at a speed of 110 km per hour. Local businessmen and donors gave their contributions and made their names written on the barricades. The process continued for a few days. However the practice was later discontinued and the only change has been that the vehicles ferrying children have increased their monthly fare.

The local minister had arrived and assured of implementing laws for safety of road users. The then SP Annamalai promised of conducting patrols and Nakabandi and got transferred. However, nobody looks at the safety of Movadi cross which had shocked the state.

Several accidents have occurred in the cross. Many people have lost their lives. There were demands to declare the area as danger zone which were intensified after eight children died. Four incidents have occurred here even after that. But the department and elected representatives are still in slumber.

It is to be seen if necessary precautions will be followed at least after this.

    Every day at least one bikers death is waiting in our road. But no biker knows whose turn today. Bikers riding middle of the track and occupying full track and not allowing big vehicles to drive.No lane discipline. No overtake rules. Wrong side driving. How can we expect safety rules when our authorities failed to implement strict rules. Politicians are busy in preparing for next election. Who will care for innocent children died or going to die. We have elected them to give promise not to implement strict traffic rules. Modern luxury cars on the road. But when we go to driving test how we have to use our hands by opening the window for stop vehicle or right or left turn shows our Indian standard of driving.

    The Movady cross tragedy three months ago was a lesson to the authorities to both the districts Udupi and Mangalore. There was a noise only for a few weeks and now everything is forgotten. What about the Omni's and other vehicles used to transport children in Mangalore and Udupi no sign on any Omni saying that it is transporting children, what are the RTO and traffic police doing. The vehicles are overloaded and will some day cause an accident and sorrow for the parents. Are the authorities waiting for another tragedy.

    You are doing excellent work ! Please highlight on Buntwal to Ujire NH 234 miserable road condition, which has saliently taken several lives in the road accidents since the past several years now!!

    British time made small narrow bridges from Buntwal till Punjalkatte, still carrying the heavy traffic!

    Though it is named National Highway, the road is even narrow then village bullock cart road, and thus taken several lives due to road accidents as a cause of steep culverts, narrow 15 to 20 feet road width, poor forward visibility due to several turns, no pedestrian pathway at Guruvayankere city and Punjalkatee etc

    Politics between congress MLAs of Buntwal/ Belthangadi and BJP MP may be the reason for not widening this stretch.. People say

    God will not bless if these politicians donot act on the widening work atleast between Buntwal to Ujire, as one cannot be irresponsible to such extent

    Shame to the local authorities, who instead of widening the road, created 4 BUS STOPS to privilege buses to stop at 4 different directions at Guruvayankere, where people require to reach Guruvayankere city by walk, as it is a place of 4 road meeting (Puttur, Buntwal, Karkala/Mudbidri and Ujire) junction, and the traffic is so much that till the shop doors the roads are stretched, and thus there is no water drainage and no pedestrian pathway!

    In our corrupt country, where the chaltha hai chalatha hai mentality exists, promises are meant ONLY to be forgotten and broken. There is absolutely no SERIOUSNESS from any quarters of our administration and therefore the meaning to the word promise SHOULD be rendered obsolete / redundant according to the Indian dictionary. This mentality has sunk so deep into the human roots with passage of time immemorial that this will fail to create any impact or a willingness to change unless there is a real determination.
