Puttur, Sep 23: A PU student hanged himself at his home at Pattemajalu in Alankaru village near Kadaba on Wednesday September 21 late evening. The student had called up his friends over mobile phone to inform them of his decision to commit suicide before going ahead with his plan.

Kiran (17), a second year PU (commerce) student of Durgamba PU College at Alankaru, chose to kill himself for no apparent reason. Even after making queries, no reasons that were serious enough could be found behind the suicide. He was the son of Pattemajalu Rajeev Poojary. He hanged himself from a cashew tree located inside the areca nut plantation belonging to his family.

Kiran, it is gathered, was good at studies, and was also a good performer in sports and extra curricular activities. On Wednesday, holiday was given to students in view of the beginning of mid term examinations.

The student had visited downtown Alankaru on Wednesday morning and had met many friends till that evening. After reaching home in the evening, he left a little while later, telling his mother that he would be back after visiting the house of his grandparents. Sometime after he left home, he called his friends over cellphone from the areca nut farm of the family to convey to them his decision to die. The friends grew panicky, and rushed there to find that Kiran had already hanged himself. He was brought down and taken to hospital in an ambulance. But Kiran breathed his last before reaching the hospital.

In honour of the departed student, his PU college declared a day's holiday on Thursday after offering silent prayers in the morning. The examination that was to be held on Friday has been postponed. On Thursday, silent prayers were offered to Kiran at Alankaru government higher primary school, of which he was a past student.

A case of unnatural death was registered in Kadaba police station.
