Mangaluru: National bird succumbs to injury from delayed intervention

Mangaluru, Sep 23: The national bird Peacock was hit by an unknown vehicle in Yekkur here at about 1.15 pm on Friday September 23. The female bird though injured, was alive, and timely treatment would have revived the bird, said the onlookers.

People gathered around the bird soon after the incident. Meanwhile, a dog tried to pounce on it. Kankanady rural police station was informed of the incident. The police arrived at the spot of the incident and telephoned forest guards at Hoige Bazar. However, they did not turn up till late.

Then Daijiworld reporter telephoned the personal assistant of forest minister Ramanath Rai, who in turn phoned the forest ranger who also delayed the matter further, saying that there is no vehicle to take the bird. He finally brought the vehicle at 3.45 pm and took the bird. The bird had died by then.

    Hello daiji, this a very serious matter of concern, same is the case with a national bird which is injured and being struggling to find a shelter near my house, for three days we are feeding it with grains and other food , but the male bird has succumbed serious injury to his right leg and can barely fly or hop. So I request you to kindly look into the matter before it falls prey to wrong hands or other animals!!

    Peacocks have increased to a great extent in places like Bantwal,Mudipu ,Sullia etc specially after MRPL extended its refinery.One bird was spotted by me in the City of Mangalore on a school ground.People have commented that Peacock is a pest and nuisance.But the really pest ate the human beings who have penetrated into every corner of the western ghats and othr places of natural habitat and destroyed nature.This will be the out come where wild animals and birds will venture into the cities.we need to remember that to have ecological balance, definitely wild life is required to exist.

    somebody mentioned people should have tried to save it. The forest department which showed such a stupid and irresponsible response, will definitely create problem if people would have taken any action. they would have arrested the guy who would have tried to help. Simply to put the blame also they would have taken that person arrested and d bird died because of him, not because of their late arrival. So, people will think twice before taking such step. Our system are so bad that people feel letting the victim die on the road than getting in to trouble. Even though there is a law or rule that no action will be taken on the person who carry the victims... but in reality it's not the case. they will end up thinking why the hell I went for this initiative. yes, I know many cases.

    we have peacocks in mudipu which are being hunted by people who prepare medicines out of these birds or animals. no one is taking care of these birds or animals.

    Few months ago Javadekar for the three notifications issued by the Ministry of Environment had dubbed a wild animal a 'vermin' or 'pest' in a state for the period of one year. In December last year, it was nilgai, a vermin, in Bihar in February, it was wild boar, again a vermin, in Uttarakhand and in March, the ministry d monkeys in Himachal Pradesh as vermins. According to The Indian Express, the West Bengal government issued kill notices for elephants on several occasions and even assigned hunters to "exterminate" the animal.

    Javadekar insisted that it was "scientific management" of animal population and the permissions for killing animals designated as 'vermin' were restricted to particular areas and time period.

    In Goa, they gave permission to kill peacocks,”.

    Under PM Modi's leadership, India followed Australia,a carrier of Lord Vishnu,Protector of Lord Indra,Goddess of wealth and national bird is officially granted permission to kill.

    It clearly shows how much our public cares and how much the forest dept. cares for our National bird...!!! We can see here lot of people and police personnel are just watching the injured bird with curiosity...but no intention to save the bird !!!It is a reality and a good example of it...!!!

    IS ANYBODY LISTENING !

    RESERVE THE FOREST FOR THEM AND NOT ROAM AROUND IN CITY ROADS

    Don't you all worry. It's not a "Matha" or a "Pitha" like the holy cow. It's only national animal. We don't care about national or public property. At the slightest provocation we destroy public property as if it's nobobody's business.

    Instead of waiting for Forest officials, police or general public would have shifted the bird to the nearest Veterinary hospital thus life would have been saved.

    It happens only in India. In Mangalore a dead bird found at the side of the road had the attention of a police cruiser, and was taken by another cruiser.

    Whereas, in another state - A man had to carry his dead wife back home, because the hospital refused to transport them.

    WHERE IS THE LOGIC ????

    In Mangalore people appear to have enjoying such events.Had the bird was taken to nearby veterinary hospital/doctor,it would have saved.Nobody took interest.......

    Really the peacock was hit by a vehicle,or some dog or Person tried to hit it who knows?Many places These birds are really a neusense.Destroy the vegetables ,fruits .so many try to drive it away.But what a excuse from forest ranger.may be waiting someone do this.How come he got it later ?They are having a vehicle but where it was?why cant Police take it in their vehicle?

    When nobody cares about humans sufferings might be whichever way they suffer in this country what do we expect for a bird. National Bird, National Animal....etc...etc... Just show off. How would we react to this? When would our hearts start feeling that pain? When would we come out and ask these questions to ourselves???? Only questions no answers.....

    Why wait for useless minister, who passed the buck to his deputy and so on....??

    This bird was clearly visible on an open road, due to its huge size.

    the population of peacocks are rising.. when we were small they used to take us to mysore from schools, for looking peacocks. but now a days we can see only female peacocks in groups. very rare male peacocks!!! they destroy agriculture and reptile family also

    @ Eric,

    It's not only peacocks, but also elephants, monkeys, pythons, deer, lions and tigers that are causing havoc, only because senseless humans have encroached their territory, thereby forcing them to wander in populated areas of the country.

    Due to the same reason, we are also experiencing lack of rain all over the country.

    Birds and animals, especially peacocks were unheard of in populated areas, as you may find them so frequently for the last 30-40 years.

    There is no one really fighting for the rights of animals livelihood.

    The forest minister as well as the forest department is not worth even a mention. Even when monkeys are used for begging and public give a call they don't turn up to confiscate the animal. Protection of trees and wildlife is last on their mind. A total sham ministry. Rip dear bird you are in a better place now. Only wished you had an instant death instead of suffering. Only if someone has called ACT we could have rescued it and tried to save it.
