Mangaluru, Sep 24: Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo thanked both the state and central government for choosing Mangaluru for the smart city project.

Addressing media persons here at district Congress office on Saturday September 24, Lobo said, “Mangaluru being selected for the smart city project is a huge contribution by the state and centre to the city. Our proposal was ranked sixth in the entire country, and first in the state. I thank the people of Mangaluru, MCC, representatives of state and central governments for their support and cooperation in managing to get this project.”

“Last time our proposal could not make it. But this time, we had taken fisheries and old port as our unique selling point. The Smart City is a project wherein both state and centre will contribute equally. The state and centre both will provide Rs 100 crore each in the first year and Rs 150 crore each in the second and third year respectively. The Central government is an ocean but the state providing an equal share despite limited financial resources is commendable. Therefore, I thank the state government and urge all the support from the general public in making this a successful project.” Lobo added.

“The first step in the smart city project is forming special purpose vehicles (SPV). The SPV will have 17 directors, and that is one representative from central government, one independent representative, seven representatives each of MCC and state government. The state government will form the SPV by the end of this month. The cities which got the smart city project in the first phase were not that successful in implementing the project. Thus we have already started the process at the earliest. So that we can make Mangaluru City, number one in implementing the project.”

“Along with old port, tourism will also be developed. Computerization of MCC has already been under process, and by next year, MCC will be completely computerised. The state government has sanctioned Rs 400 crore through Asian Development Bank for the second phase, Rs 150 crore will come in for renovating the drainage system of the city, and many other forms of grants the city will witness a total of Rs 1700 crore of investment in the coming three years, an amount which the city corporation has not seen to date. By all these funds the city's infrastructure will be developed and we will strive to make Mangaluru a model city to the entire nation,” Lobo said.

On being asked by the media persons about the steps to address traffic and parking problem in the city, Lobo said, “We have already taken steps to make the main roads four-laned. In some places, work on footpaths is already under way. Two towing vehicles will come to the city, and wherever there is space, it will be developed for parking. By all these steps, traffic situation in the city will be addressed to an extent.”

Congress leaders, Vishwas Das, Denis D'Silva and others were present.

After receiving the said fund of making smart city, also it is better to purchase a automatic Pothole Repairing Machine along with two towing vehicles on top priority, which is badly need to maintain the existing roads in the corporation area.Because the condition of the existing roads are very poor. For this a separate sub division has to be formed to take immediate action for filling of potholes formed so that the roads can be kept always in good condition. Also for parking of vehicles multi storied buildings has to be constructed at busy area,so that present parking problems can be controlled.

One important thing Mangalore must do for smart city project:-
Slowly retire all 3 wheelers from the city and replace with 4 wheelers. 3 wheelers are nuisance in the city. Please bring yellow cars like in new York city. Definitely it will become smart city.

Please scrap all 3 wheelers from the city in next 5 years. Please do not allow entry of 3 wheelers from outskirts of the city.

That announcement should come straight away...

I am happy that Mangalore is ed as a smart city. Will the Mangalore MLAs and MPs bring out in public domain with sincerity how the funds of Rs. 1700 crores will be spent and for which all projects. Whether the said funds will benefit the actual citizens of mangalore or some one from outside of Mangalore will come do something that does not suit the people of mangalore, siphon off the money and leave the city in Doldrums. Hence it is my earnest request that MCC, MPs and MLAs including the corporators of Mangalore do the following through AD:
    1. To tell the Mangalore permanent citizens for which project the funds will be utilised.
    2. How many projects will be initiated under Rs. 1700 Crores.
    3. Whether Rs. 1700 Crores is for 1 year or for how many years.
    4. What will be the value of each project and time bar for completion of the project.
    5. Who will monitor the working of the projects.
    6. Whether Citizens involvement (Not MPs, MLAs, Corporators or party workers)who have nothing to do with politics will be there to ensure that the projects are initiated fairly and sincerely.
I hope good sense prevails while undertaking projects of Rs. 1700 crores as we all know that a dead man gets up from his sleep when we hold money near his nose.

Hope Mangaluru, which has progressed very little vis-a-vis its potential in the past several decades, makes up for the lost opportunities.

With proper planning and involvement of all sections of its population, let's all hope that our dreams/plans for our beloved Mangaluru really come true. Let's be positive, let's be really Smart.

It is really very good news to all Mangaloreans.I would request concern authorities to finish the road repair works at Kadri Kaibatal road pending since March 2016 so that all the hardship faced by the residents around would be happy to see that smart city tag has benefited them too.

Good move to choose Mangalore among many other smart cities.
Economic development should be evenly distributed across the nation to get balance of development.
Conjession and migration to big metro cities should reduce.
People will get jobs in their respective states.
Why to be overly dependent on few cities? Good move!
