Yettinahole project is ecological blunder, can generate only 9.5 tmc water- Report

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 25: A fresh, revised report by Indian Institute of Science here has confirmed its earlier finding that Yettinahole project will be an ecological blunder. A fresh team formed by the institute, which went into the efficacy of the project by making spot visits and using technologies including remote sensors, has found that Yettinahole can generate only 9.5 tmc of water and not 24 tmc as projected by the state government when taking up execution of this project.

An article titled, 'Environment Flow Assessment in a Lotic Ecosystem of Central Western Ghat' published in international journal, 'Hydrology Current Research' has put the availability of water through Yettinahole at 9.55 tmc. The scientists who conducted this detailed study say that 5.84 tmc would be required for local needs. A team comprising scientists of the institute, Prof T V Ramachandra, Barat Aithal, and S Vinay has authored this article.

As per the government's statistics, annual rainfall in Yettinahole catchment area is 3,500 to 4,500 mm out of which water is needed for agriculture and aquatic animals. It has observed a gradual reduction in rainfall in the region because of depletion of forest region, evaporation, and absorption towards alluvial soil.

The report has therefore recommended for improving water management in Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru rural and other districts where water from Yettinahole project is meant to be channelized, by collecting rainwater by building tanks, pools, and other water bodies, renovation of existing ponds and water bodies, streamlining reuse of water, rainwater harvesting, recharging of underground water table etc affectively rather than going ahead with this project. The facts found by the committee members clearly have shown that Yettinahole project is impractical and unscientific.

    the problem is... who ever report, what ever report... after few days CM Siddaramiah will give a press statement that "Yethina Hole project will not be stopped at any cost". Any Moily will give a statement that "Yethinahole project is progress as per the plan and schedule, will be completed by so and so date"... we will be lost between these reports... from Green Authority, now by Indian Institute of Science Report... which one to believe , which one not to believe... Can some one call siddu and Moily... and give them a copy of this report and ask them what the hell they are in to. Also a clear investigation should be triggered where this 1300K crores which is said to be already spent.. have really gone to... whose account the money has flown to... all the truth will come out. At lease let the CM calls of this project based on all these recent reports. Or else no use of any such reports... I am telling.

    Good that Yettinahole Project is recommended to be scrapped. Otherwise in future there would have been Cauvery type disputes within the state.

    Make Mr. Moily and Mr. DVS accountable and take them to court for waste of public money. People from twin districts should ban them politically.

    So that means the project is not feasible. Why not make the project feasibility report public. What was the calculation basis for 24tmc considered earlier. How old was the earlier feasibility report and did the government go to reconfirm the feasibility report before investing such huge amount of public money.

    Lots of questions govt. has to answer.

    Who is going to repay us the money that has been wasted on this useless project so far? Sadananda Gowda or Veerappa Moily? How much more are these rogues going to loot? Are they of any use to this region? And what about our elected representatives, our so called leaders from this region? Why have they locked their mouths? Call off this disastrous project without further delay.

    24 tmc projected and 9.5 tmc can only be generated as per report. From where you got that "it is actually less than 1 tmc" ?

    Do you think there is more than 1 tmc in the about picture? Flow is not more than 100 cu secs.
    100 x 60 x 60 x 24 x 365 = .315 tmc
    1tmc = 1000 million cubic feet.
    1 million = 10,00,000

    Just don't beat around the bush. Scientists go by the fact and you measure water by picture. Very good.
