Bangalore: Lokayukta Raid - 3 Babus, Rs 30 Crore Illegal Assets

Bangalore, Dec 20: Lokayukta sleuths on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids on the offices and residential premises of 13 government officials, including an IAS officer and two chief engineers, and recovered properties worth over Rs 30 crore disproportionate to their known sources of income.

“The quantum of unaccounted wealth amassed by these officials could go up as raids are still continuing,’’ said Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde.

Acting on definite clues, the Lokayukta sleuths began raids in Bangalore Rural and Urban districts, Haveri, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Mandya, Chitradurga and Davanagere, he added.

Dr V Chandrasekhar who is under posting as Deputy Commissioner, Bagalkot, was found to have assets worth Rs 4 crore, as against his legal income of Rs 55 lakh, Hegde said.

All the officials owned moveable and immovable assets in prime localities of Bangalore and other areas, he said, reading out the statistics.

This is the second biggest raid after Lokayukta raids on residences and office premises of 13 officials in November.

V Chandrashekhar (IAS) —owns houses in Chandra Layout, Vijayanagar, a hospital in Rajarajeshwarinagar and a site in his father-in-law’s name. 367.55 gms of gold, 7 kg silver and Rs 52,330 in cash.

Guruprasad -owns houses and sites in Koramangala, Jayanagar, Banashankari 2nd stage, J P Nagar, HSR Layout, Nayandahalli.

Bisegowda - owns 30 acres of agricultural land in Chikkaballapur and 1.21 kg gold Ismatullah Khan —a palatial house in Tilaknagar, a commercial complex worth Rs 1 crore. G R Chandrashekharappa— owns a community hall, 11 sites in Davanagere, Rs 1.9 lakh cash recovered.

Venkatasiva Reddy, Subbe Gowda, Ramalinge Gowda, K Ashok, Hemanth Kumar, Najundiah, T C Manje Gowda and Yoga Ramesh— all officers have amassed wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.

    There was a Lok Ayukta raid on a certain (high-flying ) police sub inspector in Mangalore a few months ago, who was caught red handed driving a stolen car. Forget being prosecuted, the SI wasn't even suspended or an enquiry consitituted. He is still roaming around freely and the matter seems to have been silently hushed up, with the help of politicians in the previous government.

    The Lokayukta would certainly be demoralised by such incidents, but they have shown admirable courage in doing their job . Sadly, it is also very clear that the institution lacks the teeth to prosecute those found guily, even after exposing those caught red-handed. There seems to be a lot of political influence in ensuring that the guilty go scot free. As a result, the whole effort seems to go waste in the end

    First of all, I would like to pay my compliments to Lokayukta, Mr. N. Santosh Hegde, who is doing a commendable job for his State. This man needs to be recognised for relentlessly pursuing corrupt people. However, I wonder if these corrupt people will have to face the law and meted out punishment and their ill-gotten wealth confiscated. Or will this corrupt officials, with their influence and greasing the right palms, will be able to get or squirm their way out and get scot free? There are plenty of corrupt people in this country, right from ministers, politicians, IAS, IPS and officials from other branches, babus, government officials, etc., etc.

    If they are hounded, their properties and possessions raided and confiscated and legal action taken against them, then a lot of black money will be recovered and the estate market will come down and prices will fall. Moreover, with the seizure of this ill gotten money and landed property, many projects and schemes can be launched for alleviation of proverty.

    However, will the Central & State Governments and authorities do that, when they themselves are steeped and reeking of corruption?

    Most of us are obviously in the wrong business. Anyway, just a thought...is it possible that these people will come out with a lame excuse in "property appreciation" while they explain how they amassed multi-crore wealth? After all, a real estate worth 55 Lakhs 5 years ago can be worth 5 crores today at certain locations in Bangalore. Added to that we all know that the price tag of a property on paper is much lower than the market price.

    Regardless of the above raids, the common man swindled by these greedy people's servants will not get justice as probably these people will never be prosecuted.
