Bengaluru: If pushed to the wall, Karnataka would retaliate -Deve Gowda

Bengaluru, Sep 29 (DHNS): Janata Dal (S) president and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday said the Supreme Court should have ascertained the water level in the reservoirs in the Cauvery basin and delta before directing Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Addressing the media in Bengaluru, he said it is best for the court to give a ruling only after sending a team to assess the water level in dams in both the states. He said the court had failed to do this even when it passed an order on September 20. “If a commoner can think along these lines, why can’t the court?” he wondered.

He said Karnataka too had a threshold level, and if it were to be pushed to the wall, then it would surely retaliate. Taking a dig at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he said that she was extremely adamant that Karnataka release water to her state. She had thanked the court from her hospital bed itself, he pointed out.

Gowda said that when the court could accept the argument that Tamil Nadu had endured crop loss, then why couldn’t it accept Karnataka’s argument that there is no water for drinking, he said. “Is it possible to revive crops in three days?” he sought to know.

To a question, Gowda said he would not attend the meeting convened by the Centre on September 29 in New Delhi to discuss the Cauvery issue as he had not been invited. He said the state legislature had not shown any disrespect to the court by passing a resolution not to release water for any other purpose than drinking.

Issue is not the cauvery at all. we have failed to protect the western ghats and thats the reason the entire Malnad is suffering. unless we stop cutting trees cauvery will dry up very soon. Govt and people should join hands and start massive tree planting programs and stop timber trade for three years but compensate something for farmers to retain the trees

..Ismail Perinje, you are playing your politics cleverly..Kaveri issue in SC, Karnataka & TN fighting cases..then how come PM or BJP play politics here!!..can a Govt influence SC..Center can convey meeting if SC directs..i can clearly say Congress has backdoor influence in SC (since many are appointed with various political means, just check SINGHVI video) but BJP & SC is in loggerhead from day one of NDA Govt..its a failure of state Congress Govt in arguing or convincing SC..surprisingly no central Congress leaders utter a word on the issue..and even after riot & deaths Congress VP didnt visited the state, nor a statement..but he is doing rallying in UP giving lot of solutions for UP farmers..

Earlier we have seen death penalty of Rajeev killers stayed by madras high court.

If we go by same logic, Cauvery verdict can be stayed by Karnataka high court? But it needs political will...

    Sri, try this....

"The International Court of Justice (French: Cour internationale de justice commonly referred to as the World Court or ICJ) is the primary judicial branch of the United Nations (UN). Seated in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, the court settles legal disputes submitted to it by states and provides advisory opinions on legal questions submitted to it by duly authorized international branches, agencies, and the UN General Assembly."

Prima facie looks that MATCH WAS FIXED before it commenced!!!We doubt BJP's body language and behavior in the entire Cauvery issue. They including Modi played very costly drama for Karnataka.BJP want power in Karnataka forcing Siddu to resign !!!!BJP's common sense especially in Karnataka is bankrupted ?Judiciary is under cloud now and this disturbing......A clash of constitutional institution very disturbing and not conducive for Largest living democracy of the world. The whole episode could be avoided if Centre acted in time.

Distribution of inter State water ways is the responsibility of Central Government and not the State Government and Supreme court business should be only to find the legality of the contracts between States and central Government and to strike down illegal Laws & rules.

Deve Gowda is biggest political opportunist in India next only to Pawar...however what he said here is true...Supreme Court asking Karnataka to release water without verifying water levels of KRS and Mettur dams shows poor quality of judges we have...
