SURAT, Dec 22: Fearing ignominy, a husband-wife duo allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train near the city here, police said on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Naresh and Sumadevi Varma. Both of them belonged to Jharkhand, police said.
Naresh was killed on the spot, while Sumadevi, who was rushed to the Surat civil hospital, died this morning.
According to Sumadevi's statement given before a magistrate (before her death) here, she was allegedly raped by her neighbour Ajay Varma living in Parvat Patiya area here.
She said that both of them had decided to commit suicide to avoid public disgrace.
Sumadevi had come to the city to live with her husband just three months ago and the person accused of the rape is also a native of Jharkhand, police added.
