Moodbidri, Oct 13: A calf that had been tethered at Karinje within the limits of the local municipality, was attacked and killed by a leopard on Wednesday October 12. This goes to confirm that the rumours about a leopard roaming around the area were true.

The two-year old calf belonging to Anni Shetty living in Hosa Vokkalu House at Karinje had been tethered in a vacant field on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon, Anni Shetty came back to take the calf back home. But the calf was not found at the spot where it was left. A detailed search revealed the carcass of the cow a little distance away. It was seen that the chest portion of the carcass was eaten up by the predator.

Anni Shetty, who returned home, went back to the spot a little while later, and observed that the carcass had been dragged some distance away from the previous spot.

After this information was given to the forest department, deputy range forest officers, Chandrakant Pola and Anil K, forest guard, Ayyanna and others went to the spot under the guidance of divisional forest officer, G D Dinesh and inspected the spot.
