Doha: Goans to celebrate World Goa Day 2016 on Oct 21

Media Release

Doha, Oct 14: One of Qatar’s leading and most notable community associations, Goan Welfare Association (GWA), is all set to celebrate World Goa Day 2016 in traditional pomp and splendour by the poolside of Mercure Grand Hotel, on October 21 from 12.30 pm onwards.

The Konkani speaking community members and Goans of all ages and class will be celebrating Goa's culture, cuisine, customs, music and language on World Goa Day 2016, thus making the annual event a huge success as always.

"The basic idea is to promote Goan culture, cuisine, customs, traditions, music and language," says GWA president Simon D'Silva. It will display grandeur and pageantry with immensely captivating tradition and delicious cuisine that will display the real essence and identity of Goa.

Goa, a tiny state of India, a land of sea and sand, is a former Portuguese territory. It was annexed by India in 1961. The Portuguese influence has left a great impact on the lifestyle, culture, cuisine, customs, tradition, music and its language. Konkani was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by the Indian parliament on August 20, 1992, and Konkani was recognised as one of the official languages of India and the main language of Goa.

World Goa Day is celebrated across the globe including Canada, Australia, United States, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Spain, Pakistan, Germany and United Kingdom amongst others. However, the date for World Goa Day is August 20 but celebrated on different dates as per community convenience in different regions.

It will be a fun filled celebration with live performance by multi-talented local artistes like Peter Camillo, Vincy D’Costa, Jr Roseferns, Perpetua Pereira, Natcey Barretto, Rosario Dias, mimicry masala by Amresh Kamat, John De Sa. To add more glamour to the event, the winners of Doha finalist Clement Fernandes and Carol D’Souza for Gulf Voice Of Mangalore (GVOM 2016) to be held in Bahrain next month will also render their melodious voices during the World Goa Day. Agnelo Rodrigues will compose live music and the sizzling young, dynamic ace compere and Doha resident, Mahesh Prabhu will emcee the event with his unique style of compering. DJ Glorio will set the floor on fire with his scintillating music.

This is a very good initiative by the Goan group in Qatar, but i would highly request you to encourage the Goan group in Saudi Arabia to conduct such shows like how the Mangloreans do have in Saudi Arabia (Gulf Voice of Manglore) I am sure there is a huge population of Goans in Saudi Arabia too. For your response.
