I'd like to style up Narendra Modi: Hairstylist Aalim Hakim

By Arundhuti Banerjee

Mumbai, Oct 16 (IANS): He finds Omar Abdullah stylish and thinks Rahul Gandhi could do with a haircut. But if celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim, who works with Bollywood's biggest stars, is given a chance to style up a politician, he says it would be Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I would like to style up Mr. Narendra Modi. He is an interesting personality who can pull off an experimental look, I am sure. In fact, I think Rahul Gandhi needs a haircut," Aalim told IANS in an interview here.

While most politicians flaunt the kurta-pyjama look, Aalim feels they should update their fashion wardrobes with stylish clothes.

"I find it really fake when someone starts wearing kurta-pyjama and donning boring looks because he/she is a politician. Why do you have to do that? Every individual is different; so they should style differently," he said, adding, "Omar Abdullah is quite stylish!"

In the entertainment space, Aalim finds songstress Kanika Kapoor has an uber chic style while he feels singer Arijit Singh "needs a stylist". And he even has a suggestion for filmmaker Karan Johar, who has been one of his biggest celebrity clients.

"I think Karan should try out a new hair cut for his new season of 'Koffee with Karan'. He is quite smart to carry any look, so I think he should go for an experiment," he said.

IANS caught up with Aalim at the launch of TLC's "Style Inc. With Aalim Hakim", which premieres on October 20. The second season of the series features heartthrobs Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Ayushmann Khurrana, Tiger Shroff and the evergreen Sanjay Dutt, among others, who will be seen getting their looks transformed by Hakim for movies, photo shoots and ad films.

Being an iconic stylist of Bollywood stars, Aalim has not only established his name but is also continuing the legacy of his father who styled legends like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Vinod Khanna.

Talking about the changes in the business, he said: "Over a period of time, not only have people become more style conscious, but hair dressers have become more educated and well-versed with the technique and the art of hair-styling. They are updated about global trends."

Asked if a good haircut gives people any motivation to choose a good lifestyle, he said: "Since a good haircut boosts your personality and look, you start getting compliments. Therefore, as an individual, you get motivation to work on your body, diet and overall personality to look your best! It all starts from a good haircut."

Aalim has salons in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Dubai by the name Hakim's Aalim Hair n' Tattoo Lounge.
