Mangaluru: Father Muller Hospital turns around young man's jolt to joy

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 19: The life of a young 21- year- old man took on a sudden jolt when he developed weakness in his left hand following a road traffic accident a year back. Doctors attributed his condition as sustained injuries to the nerves of the left upper limb which have not recovered.

Dr Latheesh Leo, unit chief of hand and microsurgery, department of orthopaedics at Father Muller Medical College Hospital evaluated his condition and offered a unique surgery through which strength to the upper limb could be regained.

The patient underwent an advanced surgery termed Free Functioning Muscle Transfer, wherein his functioning lower limb muscles were transferred to the upper limb and connected to the vessels and nerves. The 6-hour- long surgery was undertaken by a team of doctors led by Dr Latheesh Leo and supported by the anaesthesia team led by Dr P S Balakrishna Achar and the nursing staff.

The hand is healing well and the transferred muscles are expected to begin movement of his hand in 9 months.

Congrats to you Dr. Lateesh and Dr. Blakrishna on the excellent team work. I tend to think that people like you are now keeping up the tradition and good name of Father Muller's Hospital. Father Muller's institutions have a long and successful history started by Father Muller over several decades ago and ably supported by Dr. L.P. Farnandes who was a surgeon, physician, and everything in the Hospital. It is good to see that the tradition built by him is kept up by the present team of doctors. On he administration side Father Patrick Rodricks is the successor to Father Muller who equipped with his fund of knowledge and qualifications from U.S.A. is rendering wonderful service to FMCI and the community.
