Udupi: 35-year-old nun at Karunalaya Ashram in Brahmavar commits suicide

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Oct 21: A nun in Brahmavar here has reportedly committed suicide by jumping into a well on Friday, October 21.

Sr Arul Selvi (35) is the deceased person.

Sr Selvi was serving as a part time teacher in Nirmal English medium school at Karunalaya Ashram near Doopadakatte in Hiroor for the last two years.

She had gone to her room at about 9.30 pm on October 20 after daily prayers. Sr Shaini in her room said that Sr Arul had gone out from the room at about 11.15 pm as she received a phone call.

Sr Arul had breakfast at 5.30 am on October 21 and went out telling Ashram mate Philomena Saldanha that she will be back in a while. As she did not come for morning prayers at 6 am, the inmates of the Ashram went searching for her only to find her dead body floating in the well of the Ashram.

It is suspected that she committed suicide due to mental tension as only her parents are living in her hometown. She had also undergone surgery for piles a year ago and recovered from the ailment.

Sr Jaya, head of the Ashram , complained to Brahmavar police station where a police case in this connection stands registered.

A detailed police investigation is required to rule out any foul play, and establishing the reasons for her depression. If it is induced, then the source should be brought to justice.

Well said Mr. Mathias. It is our duty and responsibility to take care and show our love to Priests and Nuns. They have sacrificed their worldly pleasure to serve us. Last vacation, I visited a Parish where lonely Priest was serving the Parish. The house was very old. No neighbors. Secluded place for a single person to reside is really not good. I asked the Priest "Don't you feel lonely father ?". His answer was awesome. "Who says I am alone here ? Jesus is always with me and around me". The confidence and trust in his voice was worth praising. May God always bless and protect our Priests and Nuns...amen. May the soul of Sister Arul rest in eternal peace.
