Not a day goes by when coastal Mangalore does not have a calamity-related news on this portal. Am aghast to read precious lives being snuffed out day in and day out due to callous attitude of vehicle owners involved directly/indirectly. Imagine that Mangalore does not even have a metropolis status, (though by mistake I believe its name has erroneously appeared in the 'Smartcity' list – either by political lobbying or otherwise). If I am not mistaken, major metropolis have their basic infrastructures a million times better than Mangalore and HAVE BETTER ROAD ETHICS AND DISCIPLINE. I stay in Bombay. You won't see daily road accidents or something like that regularly compared to Mangalore. You won’t find one. The reason is simple .. Bombayites are considerate, spare a thought for others. In stark contrast Mangalore is the other way round killing people out of vengeance or for some other reasons when in the first place they should be having their driving etiquettes right. Mangalore has potential but its infrastructure is severely starved due to rampant corruption. Bombay doesn't get a chance because you HAVE alternate mode of transport. It boasts of itself as a commercial capital. On the other side, coastal Mangalore only survives on a dense road-based transportation better off than Bombay (area and space-wise) considering a low density traffic magnitude. Mangalore is run by a totally inept, inefficient department who are self-centered, greedy, conniving in corruption and what not. I am not saying that it is not the case in Bombay. But the local representative Mr. John Lobo/Oscar Fernandes/Ivan Lobo etc. have to pool in together and ‘’act fast’’ by not only being a people's representative by independently taking upon the mantle of turning the accident zones into safe zones, but deriving strategic plans to make people aware that there should never be a hurry if you know the road discipline right. I have written in the past too, but believe firmly it may never change.
