Madikeri, Oct 22: A college student got washed away due to the force of water after he slipped and fell into Mallalli waterfall near Somwarpet in the district on the afternoon of Friday, October 21. He has been identified as Sanmitra (19), a first year BA degree student of Bharati first grade college, Shanivarsanthe near here.
Six students of the college had been on a visit to Mallalli waterfall that is located in picturesque surroundings. Sushal from Bembalur, Sadiq, Ashique, and Vishwas from Shanivarsanthe, we well as Shreyas from Bekanalli had visited the fall together. After enjoying the serene atmosphere there, the friends took some photographs and had food at the bottom of the falls. During this period, Sanmitra approached the water for washing his hand but slipped and fell.
The students said that they, with the support of two other tourists nearby, tried their best to save the drowning student but their effort went waste. A case about the incident was registered in Somwarpet police station. Station house officer, Shivanna and other personnel visited the spot and arranged to bring the body of the student out of the water. A postmortem was thereafter conducted at Somwarpet before handing it over to relatives.
It is gathered that Sanmitra was the only son of farmer couple, Govinda and Sujata from Bembalur village.
