Udupi, Oct 22: ‘Kanaka Nade’ and ‘Swabhimana Nadige’ two programmes from two opposing parties, scheduled to take place here on Sunday October 23 have been denied permission from district administration and police.
But organisers of ‘Kanaka Nade’ said that the programme will take place with slight changes in place of programme while ‘Swabhimana Nadige’ organisers said that their programme has been postponed to a yet-to-be decided date.
Organisers of both programmes spoke to media on Saturday, October 22.
Kanaka Nade
Chakravarthy Sulibele from Yuva Brigade speaking to media said “Kanaka Nade is a programme of cleaning the Math premises. We have sadly learnt that there is no permission from administration for this. Math is a private property. To hold the programme inside the premises and clean the private property, there is no need of anybody’s permission. We will hold the programme as scheduled but only within the Math premises. Volunteers have already left for Udupi from various parts of state and around 800 of them will take part in the programme.”
Pejawar Swamiji speaking to reporters later said “I am pained by the decision of the administration of not granting us permission. But we have decided to hold the programme peacefully within the premises. We have received support from political parties, people from various faiths as well from heads of several temples and Maths. I am confident that there will not be any type of violence from any side. Math does not follow any discrimination. I am ready to hold debate with anybody on this issue. If peace is compromised for any reason concerning this issue, then I will go on fast.”
Swabhimana Nadige
K L Ashok convener of Dalit Damanitara Swabhimana Horata Samiti, the organisers of ‘Swabhimana Nadige’ addressing a press conference at Ambedkar Bhavan here said ‘Praveen Poojary was killed in the name of ‘food choice’.
Udupi Chalo which was held recently emphasized on food rights of people and not on Pankti Bedha. The Dalit Damanitara Swabhimana Horata Samiti strongly condemns ‘Kanaka Nade’ which is about supporting untouchability. There is a rule for every movement in a democratic setup. Kanaka Nade provokes secularism. Though we expected around 2000 people to join us, we have postponed ‘Swabhimana Nade’ to a later date.”
Sundar Master said, “Our walk is against eradication of untouchability. We have received many threats, while doing preparation for the Swabhimani Nadige,”
Jayan Malpe of district Dalit Sangarsha Samiti said “Krishna Math itself is located in government land. Swamiji should not participate in the ‘Kanaka Nade’ programme which amounts to dual principle. He should meet Dalits and hold debate on the issue.”

Security arrangement
Superintendent of police (SP), K T Balakrishna, speaking to media said that adequate security measures have been taken to maintain peace in Udupi on Sunday, October 23. He warned against holding any programmes in public without permission. He also revealed that 3 DySPs, 1 additional SP, 13 inspectors 25 sub-inspectors, 100 home guards and 450 police personnel as well as KSRPC platoons have been deployed for security.

Udupi, Oct 22: The 'Kanaka Nade' programme planned by Yuva Brigade, which involves cleaning of Sri Krishna Math premises and 'Swabhimanada Nadige' planned on the same day in city here, are yet to get a clearance, it is gathered. The second programme is planned by 'Dalita Damanitara Swabhimana Horata Samiti'.
Both the organizations had requested superintendent of police (SP), K T Balakrishna, for permission. The deputy commissioner, to whom the applications were referred to, had sought opinion from the SP.
So far both programmes are yet to get permission, though the earlier reports claimed that one programme was given permission.
