Udupi, Oct 23: A mother-daughter duo from Davanagere, who allegedly fell ill after eating Payasam and were admitted into a private hospital at Manipal near here have breathed their last. While Rashmitha (26) from Chennagiri taluk of Davanagere district lost life on the night of October 21, her daughter breathed her last the previous day.

Rashmita was living with her husband a Devanahalli, Bengaluru. At around 3 pm on October 8, her daughter, Akshata (3), fell ill after consuming Payasam made from green gram dal and started vomitting. The child was admitted into hospital at Davanagere. On October 15, the child was shifted to Manipal as its condition continued to be delicate.

Sources said that the Payasam was laid out for the consumption of the divine as per the family's faith, outside the house. It was brought inside later and consumed. There is suspicion that the sweet was laced with some sort of poisonous substance like rat poison. As of now, there is no clear idea about the substance, and the concerned are awaiting receipt of report from forensic laboratory.

Manipal police said that they registered a case about this incident and transferred the same to Davanagere.
