Mangaluru, Oct 24: Urging the commissioner to nab the student who assaulted the principal of Milagres College, the leaders of the Catholic Community submitted the memorandum to the police commissioner Dr Chandra Sekhar in his office on Monday October 24.

The vicar general of Mangaluru diocese Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu read out the memo which was addressed from bishop’s office on behalf of the diocese and signed by bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza.

Police commissioner in his reply promised that the assaulter will be nabbed at the earliest. "I have taken special interest in this case and we have already formed three teams for the arrest of the accused student. It is a very shocking incident and must not repeat in the future. I assure the Catholic fraternity that the student will be arrested soon.”

"I urge every institution to have a watch over their students. If they repeat such incidents, then I urge the management to control such students so that such incidents are not repeated." Chandra Shekar added.

PRO of the diocese Fr William Menezes thanked the commissioner for his response.

Secretary of Catholic Board of Education Fr Jerald D'Souza, parish priest of Milagres church Fr Valerian D'Souza, president of Rachana Gilbert D’Souza were present among the others.

Mangaluru: Various organisations denounce assault on Fr Michael Santhumayor

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JS)

Mangaluru, Oct 24: Members of various like-minded organisations conducted a protest demanding justice to principal of Milagres college who was assaulted by a student recently here at DC office on October 24.

Ronald, from Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of Milagres College said "Mohammed Shahnawaz was a rude student and the college was reluctant to give him seat in the beginning itself. But considering his future Fr Michael Santhumayor agreed to give him seat. He had been given many chances but he continued his misbehaviour. Since he had shortage of attendance principal had called a parents and teachers meeting. This particular student attacked the principal. I request the police department to arrest him immediately and give justice to the principal, so that such incident will not repeat in any college."

Former president of BJP minority wing, Franklin Monteiro said "The number people joined here in the protest is not enough. If principal of a reputed college which is more than 100 years old is attacked during broad daylight, then it is a shame on civilised society. The BJP strongly condemns this act. If you closely observe the CCTV footage, then you will notice 5 people running up and down. Mohammed Shahnawaz had bought four other people who do not belong to the college. He had also bought something covered in white towel. I request the police to investigate this case thoroughly. “

“Our police apprehend big criminals based on small clue. I do not understand why they have not arrested him even though it has been three days. I demand that the other four people also should be arrested. If police do not arrest Mohammed Shahnawaz by Wednesday evening, then I with the support of others will sit on fast unto death in front of deputy commissioner’s office." Monteiro added.

CITU leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said "If a student attacks the principal, misbehaves with teachers and female students then he is a Goonda. He is not fit to be called a student. Fr Santhumayor is known for his discipline. Assaulting him because he corrected the student is condemnable. We strongly oppose such acts. Our police who arrest big criminals are not able to arrest him even though it has been three days since the incident took place. There is question whether there is any political pressure on the police. Police should arrest the culprit at the earliest. Otherwise they will have to face serious consequences. We are with the principal. We will fight until justice is delivered."

Rosario parish priest Fr J B Crasta, ICYM director Fr Ronald D’Souza, NSUI president Ashith Pereira, BJP minority morcha president Joylus D’Souza, Ex MLC Monappa Bhandary and others were present.

A delegation led by Fr J B Crasta and MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik also met deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K G Jagadeesh with a petition to arrest the culprit.

Must find out where he got the training. He does not fit to be in the category of a student. Moving and enjoying life in the rogue company. Catch & find out all his vices and punish him appropriately. Dangerous elements in the decent society. Bringing bad name to the community when intolerance is already running high!

Yes you are right. I know Fr.Micheal because i was one of his student in padua. He is very discipline. He cares his students as his children and he wants his students to be in a good position and also he wants to them as a good civilian.
I agree they teach us in church the teachings of Christ, i believe you go to church are you following the teachings of Christ? if any one assault you, harms you, threatens you do you simply sit? do you think teachings of Christ to be followed only by priest? are you not christian? christian means you yourself calling you as a Christ.
May be Fr.Micheal has forgiven him,but he has to be arrested if not he will be grow as harm to the society.
now he assaulted on one priest tomorrow he may join another college and he may assault the principle of that college also, so it is necessary to be punished.
that is what we are expecting. Pope john Paul was shot, did't he punished for his crime, did't pope forgive him.

Surprising to note when Students Unions, Trade Unions and political parties have condemned the student's aggressive assault on the principal, there is still not condemnation from the state’s ruling party or any of the party’s local leaders. In fact the Education Minister or his Department is duty bound to issue a statement in such cases. Are they really unaware about this unfortunate incident?

Franklin Monteiro's observation is correct. Rowdy student had 4-5 outsiders with him. This is a well planned assault. Also, he was carrying something concealing in white towel. I doubt it is a chopper. I wonder why police dept.has failed to arrest this rowdy. Police should not take this assault lightly. The outsiders supporting the student should be traced and their intention should be investigated. Advise to education institutes is think twice while giving the admission to students.
