Mangalore: Rs 6 Lac-plus Daylight Theft at Monteiro House in Vamanjoor

Mangalore, Jan 3: A case of daylight theft from the house of Gracy Monteiro near Pilikula in Vamanjoor has been reported on Wednesday January 2.

The house was looted of gold ornaments of approximate value of Rs 6 lac and Rs 30,000 in cash when Gracy, said to be working as librarian at St Aloysius College in the city, was at office and her two children were away in school. The owner of the house and Gracy's husband is working abroad, sources said.

The crime might have taken place any time during the day, said the police. The theft came to light only when the mother and children returned home in the evening, when they found the front door having been broken open. The house had been thoroughly ransacked.

The Kankanady police, headed by sub-inspector Bharati, rushed to the spot when the theft was reported. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dog squad also were called in to probe into the act.

This is said to be the biggest theft around this place in recent years, although many thefts have been reported from the region lately.
