Koosamma Shedthi memorial open badminton tourney starts in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Oct 26: The second edition of Koosamma Shedthi Memorial UAE Open Badminton Team League Tournament 2016 organized by India Social & Cultural Centre (ISC), Abu Dhabi started off at ISC courts on Thursday, October 20. 

The tournament was flagged off by the ISC president M Thomas Varghese in the presence of ISC general secretary John P Varghese, sports secretary AM Nizar, assistant sports secretary Prakash Thampi, badminton section secretary Savio, other managing committee members and tournament officials.

The inaugural function was attended by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) representative Jaffer Ibrahim who is responsible for developing badminton in UAE. The highlight of the day was the presence of former world champion Peter Rasmussen who has won the world championship in 1997 and European Champion in 2002.

Each tie of this prestigious team event consists of 3 men doubles, 1 each mixed double, ladies doubles, masters doubles (40 age category) and veteran doubles (45 age category). The teams will play on a double league basis in two groups.

In the opening tie of the tournament, the defending champions SPARC/Victor, Sharjah lost to the new entrant to the second edition prime star, Dubai by a thumbing margin of 0-7. In the other match ProVenture Sports, Abu Dhabi another new entrant lost to NSNL/SD combined team from Abu Dhabi, with the same margin (0-7).

On Friday (21-10-16), host ISC, Abu Dhabi lost to Prime Star Sports in both ties with an identical score of 2-5 and NSNL/SD won against FAEKA 4-3 and lost to them 2-5 in the return match.

On Saturday (22-10-16) host ISC Abu Dhabi lost to SPARC/VICTOR by a margin of 3-4 in a close encounter and in the other match FAEKA, Dubai white washed ProVentrure Abu Dhabi by 7-0.

The second edition which attracted six top teams in UAE is divided into two groups and in the initial round the teams will play double league cum knock out round and the 6 days action filled event will finish on Saturday October 29.

This prestigious event is presented by BIG Ticket-Abu Dhabi Duty, powered by NMC Group and supported by M/s Apex Trading & Yonex.
