Hangal: Burqa row- Girls threaten to discontinue studies

Hangal, Oct 27 (DHNS): Muslim girls studying at Sri Kumareshwara Arts and Commerce College here are in a bind as a section of students are demanding a ban on girls attending the college in ‘burqa.’

These hapless girl students would cut short their studies if their college bans burqa, heeding to the demand by a section of students.

The girls, who spoke to DH on condition of anonymity, said they had limited options as they have to mandatorily wear burqa as per their religious tradition. “Our parents will not send us to college if we do not wear burqa. Therefore, we should be allowed to attend classes with burqa else we will have to discontinue our studies,” they say. The girls say that they wear burqa over the college uniform and hence non-Muslim students need not suspect them of not wearing the uniform. “We have no qualms if the college initiates action against us for not wearing uniform,” they say. The Muslim girls of B R Tambakada college in Hirekerur and Bellada Government First Grade college in Akki Alur echo similar opinion.

The row over dress code has driven a wedge among students as well. They are now divided on communal lines. Students who want “common uniform” say they would attend college in colourful attire if Muslim girls were allowed to attend classes in burqa. A lecturer said that the girls were not heeding the suggestion to remove burqa once they reach the college. “Tackling this sensitive issued has become a huge challenge,” the lecturer said.

Tirumale, Superintendent of Kumareshwara College, said that it had been 30 years since the institution started functioning and there was no disharmony among students all these years.

Shivakumar Pyatar, taluk pramukh of the RSS, said that the government does not make any caste-based discrimination while providing uniform for school students. He said all students should comply with the directive on uniform.

I read in some articles some people were talking about give education to Girls, so that all over Society will get educated, and some were talking why there is very less number of girls getting education in Muslim Community...
My request to everyone is, let these girls get education in whatever mode of dress let them wear, but it should be protect their modesty...
Their are not wearing Bhurka just to take revenge or oppose College uniform, they follow these tradition from very young age...
They are going to get Education and not going for some Fashion designing College or Modelling College...
Bhurka is not came into existence now, but It was followed from MILLION Years...

I don’t remember seeing college going girls wearing burqas during my student days, i.e. in the late 70s or even during the 80s. I think this is a present trend. Looks like it’s one of the backlashes of radicalization taking place around the globe, which is not at all a positive development. After all rules of an institution or an organization are meant to be followed by all students or members.

Hypocrites always have problems with muslims. On one side Modi govt shedding crocodile tears over women on triple talaq and polygamy and on the other side its allies engage targeting them over and again..
They have no problem with sikhs wearing turbans, no issue with christian nuns and hindus putting tilak and bindya.

    Shankar,

I knew so many Muslim families and their children who attended college level (St. Agnes) but were presentable with casual cloths.

Here in Kuwait the local women may 75% are with most attractive outfits, even beats Western people. They have occupied even men dominated jobs. Few old ladies are there who wear Burqa.
Forget it is not fair on my part to talk and convince on Burqa.
I had fair share of my life with opposite ones who used to dress well and dressed to kill. I cannot forget even today.
Think wisely, act well, do not hate (if possible only Love) and enjoy life!

Gradually, there could be Muslim educational institutions (colleges) recognized by the Central Education Board and all such problems could be solved.
There are financially well to do business community and entrepreneurs who have already progressed in the field of Medical hospitals and Institutional centers. They can resolve such issues.
    Final conclusion:
With Burqa, no scope at any employment houses.

Burkha is a symbol of men's hatred towards Women's freedom.
First of all, which woman in Mangalore would be comfortable living inside that black burkha during the summer or dripping monsoons? Why men in this particular religion force so many things on women?
Mangalorean Muslim women have not even responded to the stupid comment made by Srimaan Kodijal Ibrahim.

I am sorry that you are writing with ignorance about Islam and its preachings. Please read Quran once and you will come to know about it.

Muslim women are happy about Burqah and they are not coersed to wear it. Its devine law..Some follow it rigidly and some don't. Its all depends ones degree of faith and belief.

Brother Shankar you are not a religious authority to give your verdict on Muslim personal laws or matter related to Islamic jurisprudence. Just ignorance in you speaks..Thats it my brother.

today people are questioning the school uniform. tomorrow they may question the tutorial subjects which doesn't suit for their tradition. this list may continue. therefore, the students should follow whatever the rules & regulations exist in the particular education institution. don't bring your religion/caste to the school. it is the place for study not to perform religious things.

Burqa is part and parcel of Islamic female dress code and has been practiced since ages. Earlier there was no issue and now it has become burning issue and more than that a political issue. Why then some Christian nuns who are teachers are wearing their uniform.. Law and rules should be applicable to all. Hindu girls should not put tika or bindiya on their forehead as its their religious symbol. Live and let live. Don't make issues for nothing or for publicity. Wish you all a happy and blessed peaceful Diwali. Now VHP is taking on Mr Ivan Dzouza for celebrating Diwali... what a communual mindset...In our younger days we used to take bath on Diwali and used to eat from our hindu brothers homes and enjoy the fire crackers. Festival mood makes us to enjoy and share our happiness. Darkness cant be driven by darkness. Only light can eliminate darkness. Hate cant be tackled with hate. Only peace and love can build bridges and society. Lets share our love and peace with each other and live like one single family and say no to the deviding politicians and their masters..

There is a difference between organizing and celebrating.
Will Muslim/Christian brothers will allow Hindu personnel to organize any festival in Mosque or in Church??
Any political leaders organizing the festival in religious places should not be encouraged. This is all for political gain.

Some nuns and priests are teachers. In an educational institution students are required to wear uniforms not the teaching staff. In a hospital nurses are supposed to wear uniforms but not the doctors. In the airport or seaport, the porters and customs officers are required to wear uniforms and not the administrative staff. So rules are set by every organization to be followed accordingly.

The acceptance of common uniform within the classroom and the burqa issue can be deliberated by the students and their parents amicably. However the students should not forsake their studies, education should be their prime objective. In this highly competitive globalized world everyone should take education seriously and be competent enough to take care of themselves personally.

    Shankar,
My Alm mater. (Then Government college)! But I did not see any nuns or Burqa students those days.
Your suggestion is fair enough, if they want to continue their higher studies. Even after graduation or poste graduation most of them may not seek jobs and remain as house wives.

“The purpose of Muslim women to wear burkas is to cover their body and face and to avoid nah-mahram (men that are not allowed to see them without hijab) men from looking at them. Burka is part of Islam, however, it is not mandatory to wear it and some women wear it as an act of virtue”

Then how they can remove Burqa ?
Terrorism has placed the people to undue disadvantages.

Some GCC does not permit them to drive. we allow them to drive cars in Burkha. we allow them to practice as a doctor with Burkha. why we all of a sudden started respecting women with the PM creating slogan and at the same time started ban the Burkha? Taking the discussion to a different direction. Majority have written some sense and you are writing something stupid , looking face and all. Come on. It's a dress code of the institution which needs to be respected. Irrespective Hindu, Christian, Muslim. Anybody coming in any dress code from home till college campus is their wish. But while entering or with in the campus adhere to the institution dress code. Nobody can raise issue or allowed to compromise on this. If any issue, stop coming to college and always keep in mind your parents / religion is the reason, not the institution.

If there is no dress code then the girls should be allowed wearing the burqa. I don't see a issue over there.
