Mangaluru, Oct 27: Opposing the denial of hall tickets to 22 students, Campus Front of India staged a protest in front of Milagres College on Thursday, October 27.
The parents of 22 students were asked to meet the principal who had the attendance shortage and accordingly they have been coming to the college since 7 days but were denied to meet the principal. Hence the students concerned with their parents, staged a protest in front of the college, as per the version given by them.
Protesting students alleged that out of the 90 students who were denied the hall tickets initially all except 22 have been given hall tickets subsequently. All the 22 students who were denied hall tickets belong to the same community, they said.
As the situation turned tizzy, Bunder police inspector Shantharam along with the police personnel visited the spot and took the situation under control.
Principal of the college Fr Michael Santhumayor is on leave for medical reasons after the assault on him by a student named Mohammed Shahnawaz last week. Some sources from the management said that in a PTA meeting called on October 18, it was made clear to the students that they have to follow norms specified by the university and the 22 students have not complied with it.
Mangaluru: Attendance irregularities - university to set up squads

Mangaluru, Oct 27: Vice chancellor of Mangalore University, K Byarappa, said that squads would be formed by the university to stop attendance-related irregularities in colleges under the university for verification of records relating to attendance of the students in view of complaints about minimum attendance received from some colleges.
He was speaking after presiding over the academic council meeting held in the auditorium of the university's administrative office on Wednesday October 26.
"We have complaints that some students were informed by certain colleges that they have not satisfied eligibility criteria in the form of minimum attendance for appearing for examinations. Later, their attendance records were altered after collecting money from them, it has been alleged. Therefore, to end tush irregularities, squads will be formed," he explained.
A member suggested to hold internal examinations together at a particular time, as it would enable students to take part sports activities and cultural competitions organized by the university. Byrappa said that examination time tables and question papers for examinations will be prepared by the university for this purpose. This will ensure equal opportunity to every student, he felt.
The academic council gave its approval for starting MCom degree course in the government first grade college at car street here. Discussions were held about setting up post graduate medical physics section and first grade college in the premises of Mangalore university.
Byrappa said that the university has started diploma courses in French and German languages. He said that in future, provision will also be made to learn languages of north east India.
Registrar (administration), Dr K M Lokesh, registrar for examinations, A M Khan, finance officer, Sripati Kalluraya and others were present.
