Kundapur, Oct 27: Yadthare Manjayya Shetty memorial awards were given to eminent personalities from coastal Karnataka at the 103rd birth anniversary celebrations held at R N Shetty Kalyana Mantap located in Buntara Yane Nadavara Commercial Complex here on Wednesday October 26.

Former Karnataka chief minister and MP, Dr M Veerappa Moily, who inaugurated the function, hailed Manjayya Shetty as an ideal politician with a rare personality who did not have enmity with anyone. "His life and career were pure and simple. He gets credit for being the only member from undivided Dakshina Kannada district to have been elected unopposed to the assembly. He stayed true to his image as a statesman and he can be termed as a saint in political field," Moily stated.

He added that Shetty had laid out the guiding principles of honesty and creativity in politics. "In the past whenever we attended the assembly session, we stayed united and functioned without differentiating between our party legislators and others. Calculations based on caste was not there then. A person who had skill, intelligence, and honesty got the position and status he deserved. We have to enliven this rich tradition. The moral degradation like the present times we are witnessing in which caste rules supreme when a person's eligibility is considered was not in vogue then," he stated.

President of Yadthare Manjayya Shetty Memorial Trust, B Jagannath Shetty, presided.

State minister for fisheries, youth services and sports, Pramod Madhwaraj, who participated in the function as its chief guest, said that a person who lives with honesty and dignity is always remembered by people long after his death. He cited the example of Yadthare Manjayya Shetty to prove his point. "The fact that Manjayya Shetty gets remembered and his birth anniversary is being celebrated unlike other politicians brings forth the level of his noble personality. He stands out as a leading light for present day politicians," he felt.

Manjayya Shetty memorial awards were handed owner to retired vice chancellor of Manipal University, Dr B M Hegde, and Karnataka Bank managing director and executive officer, P Jayaram Bhat. Both of them expressed their views thereafter.
