Mangaluru, Oct 28: Dakshina Kannada district sand miners and workers association has condemned the death of sand mining worker, Sharif and has urged the government to
compensate his family with Rs 25 lac.
Addressing media persons in the city, the president of the association, Naveen Chandra B said "The geology department, the police department and the district administration target sand miners who have been in the trade as traditional sand miners for many years. These are not followers of politicians working with Hitachi and other forms of machinery."
"The death of Sharif is a result of assault by police. Another worker, Jainuddin who was also injured is recovering from police attack," he added.
"We have been portrayed as terrorists for some time. If such assaults continue, then the district administration has to face the continued protests," he said.
Mangaluru: 'Contractors will be responsible for undesirable incidents during raids' - DC

Mangaluru, Oct 28: Deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada district, K G Jagadeesh, warned that sand contractors would be held responsible for undesirable incidents that might happen during raids by officials and policemen on illegal sand mines, and that criminal cases would be filed against the contractors.
Addressing a press conference in the city on Thursday October 27, the DC stressed that the district administration is committed to crush the menace of illegal sand extraction. "We will keep names of people giving us information about illegal sand mining a secret. If found necessary, we are also prepared to extend protection to them," he added.
He said that an investigation will be held into the death of a person named Shariff during one such raid near Bantwal. "There is no provision to release any compensation from natural calamity relief fund in such cases. However, at the request of the district superintendent of police to release some compensation to the family of the deceased, we will treat this as a special case and take a decision on payment of compensation soon," he stated.
