Bengaluru: Strict action if wearing of burqa is opposed- minister

Bengaluru, Oct 29: State higher education minister Basavaraj Rayareddy has warned trouble makers of strict action if they are found harassing Muslim girls wearing hijab and burqa.

Responding to queries regarding the anti-hijab agitation in some colleges by allegedly Sangh Parivar-backed associations and students, the minister said that hijab and burqa should not be identified with any religion. “It is a culture. Anyone can wear hijab or wear burqa. There is no law barring Hindus from wearing it. Constitution allows people to wear dresses of their choice. College students too have freedom when it comes to wearing dresses. No one can decide dress code for them.” he said

The minister said that there is provision in law to initiate action against educational institutions which directly or indirectly instigate students against hijab and burqa.

The statement comes after several Muslim girls studying at Sri Kumareshwara Arts and Commerce College in Hangal threatened to discontinue their studies if they were not allowed to wear hijab.

    Dear Francis, The problem with Christians is when they critisze muslims they dont think that it will backfire them too. Regarding burka ( not hijab which covers the face, even I dont like that) the same was worn by mother marry and followed by nuns, if you think it help in exams nuns are best examples because they excel more than muslim girls in academics.

    It is hijab type of dress is worn by mother may and by catholic nuns, where the face is visible.

    I agree with you Peter, if its serious issue , then religious freedom is there not to cover the face, but just making issue out of it to harass a community is not acceptable and I have not come across any serious crimes by a niqab ( face covered) wearing women. so dont judge on the sangh parivar propaganda. I want to quote Akhlaq's son (who was murdered for keeping mutton in his fridge) who is working for our airforce when the murderer's dead body was covered with tri colour. Does my father is ore patriotic who raised his son in patriotic atmosphere and taught his children to love for motherland and sent his son to protect its border and people or the murder who killed by patriotic father. All of us should know what these parivar is doing their best to malign a community.

    Right to religion is a fundamental right enshrined in constitution .Islam makes it compulsory to wear modest dress for women.Same is the case for Sikh men who are supposed to spot beaded and to cover head with turban.Sikh women Rajasthani women too cover their head . uniform is compulsory for army and police force even then Sikhs are allowed to keep neared and wear turban .This shows that religious right is a fundamental right which is above all other rights. College can prescribe uniform which is healthy practice but for Muslim and sikh women wearing scraf should be allowed . At the same time if a Muslim women does not prefer to wear head scarf he should be allowed to do so. Diversity and pluralism is essence of Indian culture .

    This minister is trying to make his own law for getting popularity and preserve vote bank. There are many reasons why the burkha cannot be allowed inside the class room. Hiding identity is not at all acceptable. If a school has right to implement uniform, it also has the right to stop Burkha. Turban is not really hiding identity, but Burkha does.
    Just because the minister says so, institutions dont have to follow his ideas.

    The Turban(Dastaar) is considered an important part of the unique Sikh identity.The provision of the Indian law has exempted Sikhs from wearing helmets in Air force and motorable road.Many schools and colleges have accepted the importance and relaxed the law for them.

    For Muslim women covering headscarf is the part of religious obedience.

    There are many voices echoed these days from Haryana to Goa blaming indecent dressing is the main cause for increase in abuse against women.

    To getting education and knowledge dresscode won't be stumble block.In my opinion school management can have an option for girls to wear the same colour drape or Dupatta to those who wants to cover their head by maintaining uniformity.

    The need of the hour is,all school and college campuses should impose strictly bar all kind of political activity inside the campuses.

    For centuries India is known for its multicultural society living in peace.

    It is not uniforms but politics damages more.

    Hijab is very decent for women. Even today in some states some women Hindu religion hide their face from men. Many men appreciate dress like Sunny Leon which is against Indian culture. Covering head, dressing decently is gaining more respect for women. I strongly stand with Islam for their dress code for women. When we were in college, Burqa/Hijab was not an issue at all. Now, all of a sudden why this dissatisfaction and voice against Hijab ? If they wear Hijab, what are we going to lose and if they do not, we is the gain ? Trouble makers are always waiting for a chance to create chaos in society.

    Issue is that of burkhas and niqaabs.
    In colleges, how can burkha be allowed in exam halls? As Jossey said earlier, we will not come to know if 'a man is there inside the burkha'.

    You must have note that Muslim girls buy very good clothes, they make up well, keep their hair nice and trendy and when they go out, wear burkha. Do you think it is done voluntarily?

    Education Minister doesn't have Education. He need to be sent to schools. This is school Uniform code. Schools are imposing so that students will be disciplined.     According to this so called Minister, everybody including students have the right to wear dresses of their choice. Well then, let schools and Colleges scrap this Uniform system and let students to attend classes with Aiyappa attire, saffron shawls, jeans and T shirts, mini skirts or whatever they like to wear.     When school authorities are banning burqa, niqab or hijab there is a concern, their aim is only to safeguard any unforeseen incidents. Why always Muslims are so defensive and displaying hostility on the school authority decision? Few days ago, I have seen a drunk man wearing burqa and niqab asking for money from Muslims and when threatened ran away. In addition to this I also want to commend Christian community for amending their norms in nuns dress code by not wearing headscarves. Think positive lets stay in harmony

    Mr. Basavaraj Rayareddy, by his arrogance and ignorance inherent to a minister of recent times, is driving the civilization backward by centuries. In a secular country, there shall be no place for practicing religion above the convenience of public order, particularly at a public place. As an individual, it is my right to identify the person with whom I am sharing a public place. No religion shall be given a mandate to practice an obstructionist social practice. This issue can be seen from the angle of security too. As such, head scarfs and veils hiding identity of a person shall summarily be banned in public places. I recall an incident at Mangalore City where a swift car rashly driven by a lady on head scarf and face covering veil met with an accident. As a witness to the incident, I am not able to identify the lady and is not able to depose before a court of law, if situation demand in the interest of justice. I am not able even to confirm weather it was a female or a human being itself at the wheels as only two eyes were visible. Here, a section of people are getting unilateral advantage as majority are driving without driving license and insurance policy and is let off on identification related issues. Some of the vehicles are plying with temporary registration for years together. To add insult, the culprit is at full unilateral advantage as she can watch everything through her two protruding eyes. My civil rights and dignity as a human being, as being in the case of many others, is severely compromised to my full disadvantage. Equality as a constitutional right is left as a mirage during my entire life time. Awaken India........!

    'Thale' illadava 'Basava', The system of uniforms in schools and colleges is based on principle of equality. If muslim girls want to be identified/separated through wearing burqa in schools & colleges what is the necessity of uniform system for others. So it the time for discontinuation of uniform system in schools and colleges.

    First of all this issue is about dress code.

    Thread or chain or bindi or Bangle or anklets cannot be treated as dress. If a institution has dress code and these things are not to be worn, we do not have any problem with that as its not any religious mandatory for us. It is more of fashion nowadays. We do not have any such mandatory practices Fortunately. For us Nation comes first, religion next.

    Uniform shawlinallu duppatta bekaadru haakli, Hijab aagli, mundaasu bekaadre adu aagli.
    But here the question is abour wearing Burkha in the colleges. Do not get confused.

    Good decision, if anyone has problems they should go to the court,you cannot gather some unemployed youth and sit outside a school or college and protest or shout slogans against the Government.
