Udupi, Oct 30: Foundation was laid for Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital in Udupi by chief minister Siddaramaiah by symbolically plating a sapling at the proposed hospital site near Alankar theatre on Sunday, October 30.

Later chief minister with the health minister Ramesh Kumar, Dr B R Shetty from BRS healthcare, district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj and other dignitaries lighted the lamp at Town Hall in a brief foundation laying ceremony programme. The programme was jointly organized by district hospital, Health and family welfare department and BRS Healthcare and Research Institute.

In his welcome speech Pramod Madhwaraj said “I am happy to welcome you all to this programme. This is a happy occasion for the people of the district. But few people are unhappy and they are protesting. The project with an outlay of Rs 150 crore has only one intention of helping the poor and downtrodden,”

“The hospital is under the government and is managed by monitoring committee headed by deputy commissioner. Dr B R Shetty is investing the money with a good intention of helping the area where he was born and brought up. I am happy to be part of this pro-poor project. The chief minister has always been a man of poor people. He has always helped them to come up in life. He always had people friendly policies.” Madhwaraj added.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah speaking on the occasion said “I am aware about the small opposition to this project. Lack of right information and political benefit make them protest like this. This is not privatisation. This is only private and government mutual understanding for the benefit of poor people. Some are asking does not the government have the money. We have spent more than Rs 1, 63,000 crore for the welfare of people. Around Rs 7,000 crore has been spent only for medical and healthcare. In this particular case, we want the best possible efficiency. BRS Healthcare has the knowhow to give best services,"

“I am also told that some people from my own party Congress are opposing this project. But one should check whether they are still in Congress. As per my knowledge, they have not been active in the party in the recent past. The state government will continue its mission of helping the downtrodden in the society. 80% of the 135 promises made in the election manifesto have been fulfilled.” Siddaramaiah added.

Health minister Ramesh Kumar said “District hospital here and in Mangaluru namely Lady Goschen and Wenlock were not managed properly. Where were these people then, who are protesting now? We do not have any intention to go against people. Dr B R Shetty has come up with the best intention of helping people. The government is committed to provide the best healthcare in the state.”

Dr B R Shetty said “I was the vice-president of Council here long back. I know this place very well and I did a lot for the sanitation and drainage problems here those days with Dr V S Acharya. I love this place. That is why I am here. BRS Healthcare is one of the best in the world as per an International survey published from London. I do not have to make money from a project like this,”

“One day, I was shocked to see the condition of the district hospital and hence I gave a proposal to the government. I wanted to do some service to the society in memory of my mother. So this project has come up in her name. Only by providing a committed and selfless service, I can pay real tributes to the souls of my parents. Both the 200 and 400 bed proposed hospitals will run with the sole motive of service and nothing else. ”

C R Shetty, Shalini Rajneesh, Pratapchandra Shetty, Gopal Poojary, Ivan D’Souza, Abhayachandra Jain, Govind Raj, Meenakshi Madhav C Bannanje, Narasimha Murthy, deputy commissioner T Venkatesh, zilla panchayat CEO Priyanka Mary Francis and others were present.

Late Haji Abdulla was very well known philanthropist of his times and symbolized personality who had believed in communal harmony. He is the founder of Corporation Bank and his photograph and bust can be seen in most of the branches of Bank. Hospital which is now being revived is built by him. Let the new Hospital fulfill the very intention of service to the poor and humanity in the days to come....

Dr. Ranjan Shetty, it is really hard to digest a congress cm is non corrupt. So many bhaghyas with no money in govt., you think he is doing good to the people of Karnataka. With steel bridge without proper checking and fast track permission you still think no corruption. This CM is famous only for his foul mouth and various bhayas nothing else. Congis will be wiped out completely in next election.

When I was a child, I had heard of Dr. B.R Shetty planning to build bigger airport at Padubidri & was facing opposition from political parties. I wish the airport was built in Padubidri then as land acquisition would have been easy. It would have been much bigger, well connected and safe than the present table top airport equidistant from Udupi & Mangalore. I had also heard that his only condition was to name the airport in his mother's name. What's wrong in this and what's wrong now in naming the district hospital in his mother's name along with the land donor's name. I don't think he has any financial motive as he owns much bigger companies abroad.

Would have been given two names for different wings of the hospital.

b r shetty is big name in gulf for medicine and health care. it is good news that he is starting a hospital in his native udipi. i suggest few wards should reserved for poor patients also. my friends in other camp should not agitate for naming the hospital as kossamma shetty haji abdulla mem. hospital. i think kosamma his mother name. haji abdulla was great visionary and philanthropist and founder of corporation bank. there is small but well maintained museum at udipi to his memory maintained by corp. bank.

Dear Dev Kumarji, Please stop thinking negatively in everything instead put your thoughts positively. It does not matter what name the proposed hospital will carry but what matters most is the benefit this institution will provide to the people of the District. As we all know that the government health care system is very poorly managed,I am sure it will be of great help with Dr. BR Shetty's partnership in developing this facility in our district. Having seen Dr. BR Shetty's health care facilities in UAE and the group of companies under his management, I do not think he is interested in making money from this venture. Let us hope this project will turn out one of the best facility in our Karnataka State with both Government and Private partnership. May God Bless all.

Do you think DUbai has better facilities than India? The only thing is nobody cares about poor. Whether its politician or businessman. The deal is to get free land. Tomorrow poor will be poor running to another government hospital.

This is 2nd major project for Udupi after successful completion of Udupi-Manipal 4 lane road which was once thought to be impossible due to many issues. Due to determination of late Dr. V.S. Acharya and DC Mr. Ponnuraj, finally it was done. Unfortunately, Dr. V.S. Acharya passed away before he could work on Udupi-Malpe 4 lane plus ring road for Udupi.

Vested interest in privately run hospital? It looks like Govt. hospitals (free care) are purposefully made to provide poor service so that the private hospitals can thrive. We need more people like BRS should come forward to run the hospitals jointly with govt. so that the citizen can get good service. Just imagine the attitudes of the staff at the govt. hospitals. Health department is one of the worst managed departments in the government.
