Beltangady, Nov 1: A labourer was killed by a falling pipe due to the negligence of truck driver. This incident occurred at Mittabettu in Pilatabettu village near Punjalkatte on Sunday October 30.

A truck loaded with borewell equipment and casing pipes was moving on a steep road from the direction of Nayanadu towards Bantwal. The truck began to move backward all of a sudden, at which the driver reportedly instructed the labourer accompanying him to get down and place a thick wooden block behind the wheels to stop the backward movement of the vehicle.

When the labourer, identified as Gaguram (20), son of Tularam from Narayanapura in Chattisgarh, was  complying with these instructions, a casing pipe stacked behind the truck suddenly slipped and fell on him. Gaguram suffered serious injuries. Although he was taken to hospital immediately, he died before reaching there, policemen said.

Punjalkatte police have registered a case relating to this incident.
