Bengaluru: Tipu Sultan a monarch, not freedom fighter- High Court

Bengaluru, Nov 2 (PTI): The Karnataka High Court today questioned the state government's logic behind celebrating the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, observing he wasn't a freedom fighter but a monarch who fought to safeguard his interests.

"What is the logic behind celebrating Tipu Jayanti? Tipu was not a freedom fighter, but a monarch who fought the opponents to safeguard his interests," Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee, presiding over the division bench, observed.

Justice R B Budhihal is the other member of the bench.

The observation was made by the Chief Justice during a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation filed by South Kodagu- based K P Manjunatha, challenging government's move to celebrate Tipu Jayanti.

Justice Mukherjee also questioned the logic behind celebrating Tipu Jayanti amid fears of communal tension escalating in Kodagu district and other parts of the state.

He observed that last year's celebrations had resulted in a law-and-order situation after protesters resorted to violence.

However, public counsel M R Naik defended the celebrations, saying Tipu was a great warrior who fought against the British.

Countering the submissions, Sajan Poovaiah, counsel for the petitioner, said Tipu was a tyrant ruler who killed people belonging to many communities, including Kodavas, Konkanis and Christians.

The hearing will resume tomorrow.

The Congress government's decision to observe the birth anniversary of the 18th century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom has stirred a major controversy, with opinion sharply divided among intellectuals, academia and different communities and organisations.

Tipu Jayanti, slated to be celebrated across the state on November 10, is being observed since last year following a government decision, which had triggered a major row and caused violence in Kodagu district last November.

RSS had stated recently it opposed the celebration and would stage protests against it as the ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom was a "religious bigot and a violent sultan".

BJP has also expressed its strong opposition to 'Tipu Jayanti'.

People generally tend to hate british rule by saying that british did that and british did this. They actually dont realise the India is what it is today because of the british rule. whole India was unified under british rule. thus it was easy for people in it to mingle. If british never colonised India, there would have been different countries. its likely those would have been kingdoms and not democracies.

We Indians are biggest Fools. We make our rulers, Priests and Landlords as God. Rulers do not do anything good for anyone. Whatever development they do it for securing their name, fame & power. Everything they do has self interest in it. Priests do it for name and to earn maximum for their family. Landlords exploit common poor man. We should stop saying Sir and call fellow humans equal brothers. We must stop Koti Koti Pranama or Namaskar. Only Namaskar to invisible Sri Krishna because without Sri Krishna we can not win war with Pakistan or win Medals in Olympics.

HC decision is welcomed. All those who fought against the British prior to 1857 were mere kings or rulers of princely states in divided India. They often fought against each other, either with British or French support for protecting their respective territories and for their own survival. The concept of India as one nation and independence from British rule started with the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, which is also known as the First War of Independence. There is no sense in celebrating jayanthis of Tipu, Aurangzeb or Shivaji.

Do you know that ownership is contested between: Britain, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran along with a few descendants of several former holders, such as Jaswinder Singh Sandhanwalia.

I think we indians need to get priorities straight. What we need now to ask UK is to return Mallya back to india so that he can be prosecuted instead of going on a wild goose chase.

    Very good judgement.
There is definitely no reason to celebrate his Jayanthi.

What we have been reading & learning all these years, it appears, Tippu Sultan was a tyrant, he tortured Hindu and Catholic religion. Killed innocent people, besides, he was womanizer. He was protector for himself and his religion. No need to praise him or celebrate his Anniversary.

Last one week not good for extremely corrupt, scheming wicked CM Siddu & motley gangsters of K'Nataka

    1) STEAL bridge construction deferred by 4 weeks due to 11 PILs filed. This is as good as SCRAPPED as environmental clearance will not be given to cut 890 Trees

    2) High Court now pours Hot water on Tippu Jayanthi celebrations of his 'minority appeasing sickular' Govt. Another 9 PILs filed by Kodavas, Konkanis and Christians in Madikeri, Mangaluru and in Hassan

    3) NANJUNGUD by poll as good as LOST since both BJP & JD(S) have decided to support Srinivas Prasad

I quote from the daijiworld news: Countering the submissions, Sajan Poovaiah, counsel for the petitioner, said Tipu was a tyrant ruler who killed people belonging to many communities, including Kodavas, Konkanis and Christians. Unquote.

ABOVE IS A WELL RELIABLE FACT KNOWN TO THE KODAGAU, UDUPI AND SOUTH KANARA (D.K) DISTRICTS.

TIPPU PROSELYTISED CHRISTIANS AND HINDUS AND DESTROYED THEIR WORSHIP PLACES IN THE NAME OF JIHAD.

Courts are legal institutions but not academic institutions. Having said that it is true Tippu is more a monarch than a freedom fighter. Siddhu is a politician and has no knowledge of history.
